I have a 1993 f-350 7.3 idi with factory ats turbo.
I am in the process of changing the engine to a non turbo 7.3 and want to use my old turbo. My question is what do i need to change for the turbo set up, and do I need to turn the ip pump up and how much.
Check on the ATS web page installation instructions........and pump turnup.
PROCEDURE
To realize the benefit from turbocharging your diesel engine, the injection pump maximum fuel delivery should be increased. This is done by removing the timing cover on the passenger side of the injection pump. Remove the top cap screw of the timing cover using a ¼” wrench. Loosen the bottom cap screw and let the timing cover plate rotate to the bottom with the rubber gasket. Now rotate the engine using a 15/16” socket and ratchet on the INJECTION PUMP FUEL SETTING
alternator belt pulley until the allen head leaf spring screw is centered in the opening. Using a 5/32” allen wrench, turn the allen head screw inward (clockwise) ¼ of a turn. The injection pump output will determine maximum exhaust temperature.
CAUTION: Set injection pump fuel delivery where exhaust gas temperature can NEVER exceed 1050 degrees Fahrenheit.
PS NEVER turn up the pump without a Pyrometer installed.
you need all the parts associated with the turbo. if its a factory system, you can upgrade to the larger exhaust side of the turbo which will be a big benefit to you. if you are using a non turbo replacement, yes, you will have to turn up the fuel delivery, which is done internally to the pump.
turn the pump all the way you will like it instead of just a 1/4 turn, done it on 3 of these trucks. 94 turbo diesel, 93 non turbo and 93 non turbo with ats turbo add on. but if you have a auto like e4od trans and turn the pump all the way up chances are u may smoke the trans elspecially if u are pulling something but have it built up with updated converter and shift kit then no problems buddy has done this twice loves his turbo diesels with the pumps turned all the way up and the updated trans. you also can gain around 50 horse by advancing the ip to the pass side.
50 ponies?, 25% more horse power? I find this somehwat hard to belive. Also, I think the general consensus from the more refined posters I have read on this site, it is known that messing with your injector pump in an arbitrary manner of "turning it up all the way" or just "advance it a bunch" could/will increase power, but more importantlly severe damage can occur. Such arbitrary suggestions should also be followed by the warning of engine damage. I for one as a very new user almost followed general advice to crank it up, but thanks to the posts with somewhat of a more technical and educated background I did not, and my engine is not damaged.
yes pyros are installed and no problems have ever occured no engine damage and at the dealership we had an ambulance which smoke so we called a diesel performance shop and they said to advance the pump and it will get ride of most of the smoke and it will start easeir. so far it has not come back. when both of these things are done to the pump it makes the world of diff to these vehicles try and see. the only problem when we turned the pump up all the way my buddy was hualing a car down the interstate about 95mph and the pyro was just starting to get a little on the warm side slowed it down a little and just fine. sorry if you thought i was trying to lead u astray if you really want some ponies take the springs out of the pump but bigger injectors will have to be put in and an electric fuel pump will have to be installed because the lifter pump will not supply enough fuel

well im just guessing on how much power i make now i have no dyno and don't plan on it im just guessing by sop and what other trucks feel like that around the same number. is it really 50 ponies or 25% increas idk or care i know its a lot more then it had and thats all was worried about.
i have a pyro that has reached about 13 to 1400 degrees and sustained it on many runs reaching over a 100. again there im just guessing by the speed at which everything flys by. i have added a lot of fuel and a lot of timing in the so called arbitray mannor. yeah i would suggest it to others but i tell them yes there is risk and only go as much as u feel comfortable w/. bump the pump a few deg and then add just enough fuel if u want max out timing and fuel go for it but i make it clear that there can be damage. and to whatch the guages.
