HX35

I'm going to fab up a turbo for my idi and I'm looking for opinions on turbos . I'm thinking of going with the dodge cummins hx35 or a garrett t3 off of a powerstroke .
Basically which ever is cheaper , and obviously if one is easier to fab up that's what I'll use .
I'm not looking for insane boost or huge power but just a little more steam would be nice ... Thoughts ?

Go with the Hx35. It is a better turbo compared to the psd turbo and will spool better. There are a few people on here running the Hx35 with good results as well. Another option would be the wh1c. It is similarly sized to an Hx35 and will be roughly the same size as well.

I like my hx35, i would look at a 14cm turbine housing however. Make sure its a HX35 and not an HY

Mike is right on with the HX35 and 14cm housing... The Turbo will work well for most IDI'rs, just gotta have it setup to perform right with the bigger displacement... The cold wheel will flow fine.

I'm thinking about exhaust - to feed the turbo .
AnyOne know if the drivers side exhaust manifold will bolt up and fit on the passenger side . I'd like to use that "down spout "as the up pipe on the passenger side to easy in fabrication ...

I wonder if they'll swap and exit out the front facing up

That would make it much easier to fab up the exhaust pipes.

I'm not sure if they do swap over cus I haven't seen anyone actually do it. But I wouldn't think it would be out of the realm of possibility...

Well we will see about the "flipping of the manifolds" I think it would be real tight in a truck because the angle of the head port surface is 45* to the ground so the outlet will face more sidways than up when reversed. I have been looking at using a passenger side manifold on the drivers side of the engine in my MotorHome application. I need the outlet to run out and rearward on the "drivers side" of the engine for my custom turbo mount to be in the area of the original downpipe on the Motorhome. (The engine is in the rear) Playing with them on the bench it seems using 2 passenger side units will work best for me at this time. Will see when I mock it up on the engine stand. The downward outlet on the driverside manifold will put it facing the wheel well under the heatercore on a truck application so I think it would be pretty tight to the frame as well. I was told about some International Truck manifolds that were differant but havent found any pic's of them yet.

If you happen to think of it can you take some pictures of the manifolds installed during mock up , I hate to mess with mine as its a work truck ( daily driver )

The manifolds will swap right side up, up side down, side to side etc. As long as you have clearance anyway. At first i thought of using two same side manifolds... ended up just using the NA Y-pipe. Actually works pretty slick. Cut say 3' off the end of the Y, use that as your up pipe. Not to mention its double walled pipe, good for keeping heat in. Also, if you smack it around a lil, it forms a rectangle the exact size of a T3 turbo flange lol

I will be doing a thread on my build when I get closer to starting the engine, that way I can update in real time as I do the swap. I will put up some pics of the exhaust system when I mock it up for you. As I will probly have some questions about my turbo mounting and stuff.
