I want to drop the pan on my 79 4x4 400 C6 trans.
How many qts are in the pan?
According to my Chilton, i need 13 qts to do a full flush, is this correct?
Thanks.
Pull the dip stick on the trans and it will say type f, or cj, or dex. Cj and dex are the same thing. Usually 77 and later are dexron same as cj. If you are getting burnt fluid after changing it problably time for a rebuild. I know sucks.
Starting with 1977, Ford specified Type CJ Fluid (ESP-M2C138-CJ) in the C-6 transmission. It had a yellow look, not red. Look in a '77 and later manual, or just flip a quart of Mercon or Mercon V trans fluid over and read it as they both back cover it's apps.
If dealing with a 76 or earlier C-6 that has never been rebuilt, use Type F as that is what came in it and likely has been used (or should have).
If rebuilding a 76 or earlier C-6, then you can use Mercon or Mercon V (Type CJ is no longer made) as all frictions and seals are new.
Or just google ESP-M2C138-CJ or Type CJ fluid (as opposed to ESW-M2C33-F or Type F fluid).
Mobil Type F ATF is not recommended for automatic transmissions in Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, American Motors, or any other cars requiring a Dexron-II, Dexron-IIE, Dexron-III or Mercon-approved fluid, or for those Ford products requiring an M2C138CJ (Type CJ) fluid or an M2C166H (Type H) fluid. For the above applications, Mobil ATF D/M (Dexron/Mercon) or Mobil Multi-Vehicle ATF are recommended.
I used dex/merc when I changed mine (filter and draining the TC) along with a can of seafoam transtune. Including that can I used about 8qts to fill it back up. I didn't drain the cooler though (forgot). The main difference between the fluids is the additives, i.e. friction modifiers, anti-foaming, etc...
