C6 question
Hey guys, I put a C6 in my '89 F150 recently, but havent gotten it roadworthy yet. While I was at it, I did alot of other stuff that had been neglected by the previous owner. Anyway, the C6 I am using is out of a '78 or '79 (I think) What type of fluid does it take, and would it be alright to go ahead and drain the torque convertor with the drain plug before I fire it up, or should I just change what's in the pan and run it a while and then change the torque convertor fluid? This trans has been sitting for about 5 or 6 years, but the insides are very clean. I did put in a new front and rear seal too, and changed the filter and am goin to change the modulator valve also.

I always drain the converter if it has a plug. Just remember, you will have to fill it with fluid, you need to start it and pump fluid into the converter and then shut it off and add enough fluid to bring it to the proper level. Don't try to put the full amount of fluid required in right at the start. I also strongly recommend that you drop the pan and change the filter. Re-usable pan gaskets made of a rubber composite are available. I would also recommend a new vacuum modulator if this tranny has been sitting around for a while.

Is there anyway to tell exactly what year the trans is? I'm goin by what the guy who I got it from said? I know you are NOT supposed to mix Type F and Mercon fluid, is this true?
