Sorry folks, I'm sure this has been posted before but I couldn't find a clear answer in a search. I've got an `85 F150 that I picked up about 5 months ago, and although it appears to have been well taken care of, I don't know HOW well ... atleast in regards to fluid changes, etc.
When I drop the trans. pan to change the filter and drain the converter, what fluid does this year call for .... Dex III of Type F ?
Jeff, Start by looking for any info on your dipstick. If the owners manual is in the truck, look there also. My 1996 Aerostar, and my 1974 F-250 both use Dextron3/Mercon fluid. I do not know if your truck uses this fluid, check first. If you can find a store that sells the fluid in gallon containers, it will be a lot cheaper than buying quart bottles of fluid. If your trans pan does not have a drain plug, most do not, suck fluid out of the pan through the dipstick tube before you remove the pan, it is a lot less mess.

Reason: spelling
Actually for a C6 you can run either Dextron III or Type F.
I use type F in my 82 because it is a built transmission and the builder specified type F.
I used Dextron II and later Dextron III in all my other Ford C6's without a single problem. This was in 70's Lincoln's and also my Torino.
well the stuff I use is actually dextron/mercron III
as far as I know type F has greater friction so if you want harder shifts and less slipping use the F
Less slipping equals longer transmission life because of less heat, and faster engagement. I run type F even in my E4OD an old time trans guy made me a believer. It shifts harder/firmer and really makes a difference. They claim over time it might damage something, but I havent seen that yet.
The Books Call for Dexron II. This is as far back as 1981.
Which Dexron II, was superceeded by Dexron III, or the proper Ford Name Mercon.
Should Use the Dexron/Mercon in the tranny, cause that is what the manufacture recommends.
However in such cases as tranny Rebuilds like 82f1507.5's case, use what the builder recommends. The builder may have built it to an earlier specification etc...
Then What exactly do you use TYPE F in? I have never had any luck with dex/mer III Its junk in my opinion. But seriously not trying to insult anyone, but if Type F is not for a C6 then what does it go in?

Specification, ESW-M2C33-F (Type F) is only for power steering fluid in our year range, 1980-1986.
All Ford Built Trannies the C4, C6 and AOD, except the C5 between 1980-1986 is supposed to use D7AZ-19582-A, or B (XT-2-QDX) (Dexron-II), (which was superceeded by Dexron-III/Mercon later).
C5 is supposed to use XT-4-H (Type H)
ESW-M2C33 (Type F) was used in all automatics before 1980, except for the C6,
1977-1979 the C6 uses D7AZ-19582-B / ESP-M2C138-CJ (Dexron II Series-D)
This is according to the books I have and 1981 owners guide.
