Where would I buy a 1972-stock automatic C6 that'd hook up to a 390? If issues continue in my current one after I add more fluid, I'm thinking I'll pull that one out and use it as a practice rebuild (at another time).
Before, I thought I'd get a rebuild kit and just rebuild mine, learning along the way. However, family & friends are telling me that since it'd be my first time, I should go ahead and buy a complete new one.
If I do go this route, my plans would be to save the old one, practicing on it over the years, and eventually putting it back in, to keep a little original authenticity of my '72 F250.
or head down to your local Oreilly's for a reman. Oh, if you get one from a parts store, you'll have to turn in your core or eat the core charge. If ya wanna keep your transmission for the sake of originality, then ya gotta find one in the JY to turn in.
Okay, thanks. And just to clarify, a stock '72 F250 with a 390 would have a C6, right? I haven't checked myself yet (I will be doing so) but so far I've only gone off of info online and the fact that it's an automatic. Thanks again HIO Silver!

K thanks. I know that's a borderline dumb question, but in the past I haven't done so well to confirm things before I go through with something (i.e. making a big purchase), so I'm just practicing good habits and asking questions. =)
Nutter O, Find a local non-franchise tranny shop that has been standing for a while and talk with them. I didn't chase the links but a local rebuild should run $6-800.00 and be professionally done.
The C6 is not a trans that a novice should attempt to overhaul, even with a shop manual. There are more snap rings and washers than you can shake a stick at, are specific to certain locations.
There are steel and lined reverse, forward and direct clutch plates. Don't mix these up, otherwise...
As John says, find a local shop and have them overhaul it.
The C6 used in 1968/76 F100/350 360/390's are specific. Not the same as used with other engines.
Thank you all for the info & advice. Looks like I'll check out some shops when I get a chance. Yeah I'll take NumberDummy's advice and not even attempt to practice on it...I'm sure my instructor at school has something I can look at next semester.
Thanks again!

Just keep looking, I bought a 72 C-6 for a FE on E-bay, it had been rebuilt and sitting on the shelf of a transmission shop for at least 6 years, maybe 10 no-one knew for sure. Shop owner died and new owners were selling everything not current on e-bay with a $50 starting price and no reserve. I was the only bidder, cost me $110 shipping so for $160 it was sitting in my shop. I changed the front, rear and shifter seals, put in it and it works flawlessly. I know I took a chance but at $160 it would have been worth it even if it had needed rebuilding.
