Just got back from the junkyard. Got a 130 amp alt. Hoping to get it installed before the meet. Took it to O'reily's and test good. Got the wires all the way to the fuse box (under the hood) I think it has the 175 amp fuse. Also got the positive wire to the starter. Pulled an other 175 a fuse from an other car as well. Ooh and the fuse box as well.
for alternator ID, there was a small-case 3g used on smaller cars that looks like https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...7aVOtwZhL5MAyg its a lower output. the large case unit is what we all play with, and it looks like https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/i...3N9NvxqQsepvDA
notice the difference in how many holes are in the front of the case. in stock form, the large case units are always 130a, while the small case units are something less, IIRC 90 or so. note that the large case 130a come in a few different mounting styles. the best one to get can be found in the taurus with the 3.0. note that the 3.8 has the wider mounting, so it takes a bit more work to mount, but is functionally equivalent. most of the 4cyl cars came with the small case unit, which is not what you want.
Josh is right. If your looking at the front of the alt pully side, like from the front of your truck. The front of the alt's have spoke 's like a steering wheel, kinda. In the spokes are the holes you want to pay attention to. The 95 amp has four holes in the spoke's and the 130 amp has only two holes. When I went to the junkyard I expected it to be picked clean. Not the case. I had plenty to choose from. I grabed two. One tested good, one bad. Took it back and pulled an other one that test good. There are different mounting styles as well. Be sure to grab one the same as your truck. There are large case and a smaller case. The large is 8.25" the small 7". I got one of each. My truck has a 7", but as I am a welder I can make something pretty quick to house the 8.25". While you are there grab the wires that go to the alternator as well. I also got a fuze box and a couple 175 amp fuzes, those are mounted on the driver side. Just follow the wires over to it. Haven't installed it yet. Hopefully this week. If you have any more questions justn msg me
