what is this part for??

Hello, trying to find out what this three prong relay looking componets is for, when its pluged in dash lights flicker on and off, volt guage bounces from 12 to 14 and clicks in conjunction with lights going on and off. When its unpluged, no problems, so far at night left side cluster bulb is out, Ihave not pulled cluster to replace-check bulb
Thanks

The only thing I can think of that would be "factory" on that side would be a relay for the cab lights mounted on the roof.
Does your truck have roof lights?
Does the wiring look like factory?
Are the three wires black, brown, and black w/ white trace?

no roof lights, 2 of the three wires were melted together, repaired wiring, to the best of my memory is brown, black and black w/white, after disconnecting the plug my flickering situation stoped, but not sure if it needs to be connected, all items seem to work fine. Is it the instrument cluster voltage regulator?
Thanks
Jeff

Nope, the ICVR is smaller, attached to the back of the instrument cluster and has only two electrical connections that look like a 9V battery.
This is a picture of the ICVR

no unfortunatly not, need to trace further as to where wires are going, one wire runs thru the firewall near the fuse block junction, other 2 wires, go to the right of the dash, all appears to be factory but unknown for sure
Thanks
Jeff

If its a ford part (really pretty much any other part for that matter) should it not have a part number of some sort on it somewhere? That may help your search. If its a ford number give it to mike or number dummy, or plug it in to a PN search bar on something like autozone.com, might give ya some answers.

Factory wiring harnesses came with paper labels on them that had an engineering number, not a part number. I have charts that cross that number over to a part number although the chances of the tag still being in place after nearly 40 years is slim at best.
The color of the wires that the OP said he was dealing with (black, black w/ white trace, and brown) are the same as the factory harness for the relay for the roof mounted cab lights. Several possibilities are it originally had cab lights, a previous owner was going to put cab lights on and that's as far as he got, the underdash harness has been swapped for one from a cab that had lights, etc. After fourty years a lot can happen to a truck and the ones who would know are not around to answer.
Best bet is to trace the wires and see where they go.

Interesting, i knew the wires themselves had paper labels, but i figured stuff like relays, switches bulbs etc had PN's. In fact im 99% sure that the dash bulbs have PNs and pretty sure so does the ICVR and things of the like. Oh well seemed like a good idea at the time.

A lot of the parts Fords have do have numbers on them but these are all engineering/casting numbers. Ford hasn't put an actual part number on a part since the early 50's.
Most of the time the engineering numbers can be crossedover to the correct part number. You're correct though on the relay, if it's a genuine Ford part it should have an engineering number on it.
