Replace belt tensioner??

Replace belt tensioner??
I was trying to release tension to change serp belt. I was getting a squeal when a/c kicked on and my volts were running low at idle.
Anyway I broke the tensioner turning it with 1/2" ratchet. Two questions:
1. Would a bad tensioner be the cause of the squeal?
2. How hard is the replacement of the tensioner? Any step by step instructions around.
Hope someone can chime in with help. Aaarrrrgghhh!!!!

Can't say yet. The squealing wasn't consistent. The tensioner was definitely seized and I replaced the belt too. So, I suspect between the two my squealing and charging problems will be cured.
