5.8 Oil Pan Replacement

Well, it has occurred to me that while I changed out the headers on the 95, the pan looked to be soft with some bleed through in the pan.
So I'm not one to try and fix it, I'd rather replace it.
What steps do I need to take to do this without removing the engine?
I've only done it once and the motor was on a stand.
Figured while I'm in there, I'd put a new pump as well.
Any types to stay away from?

I go with a standard replacement pan, strip it of any paint and paint it yourself. That way it doesn't not have the same fate as your original pan. I suppose you could go with Moroso or Milodon pan? The gold iridate coating will be good.

I've never had one off a later model truck, probably the same issues as a bumpside. Have to jack motor up high enough to get it out. Likely have to drop pump to get pan out, so you'd need gaskets for that so replacing pump isn't bad idea.

Even with a new pump, I usually like to remove cover and inspect rotors. Clean it up, then relube it with some oil(to allow it to self prime) and put back together.

Get the factory style rubber gasket with steel rings around all the bolt holes. Keeps from over torquing.

I would do moroso, but for a truck I have no intention of overdoing as my 92, I think a good solid replacement would do the trick.
The pump tho, best to get a OEM unit or a high flow unit from earlier years?
I think the misses would kill me if I showed up with something shiny for this one lol.

Well I have use of a overhead crane, so I might just remove the plenum, disconnect mounts and see what happens.
Where can I order a one piece gasket?

Do not get the high-flow unit. Just get a standard Motorcraft pump.

You will have to jack the engine WAY up, perhaps removing the intake plenum. You may also need to unbolt the tranny from the rear crossmember. When I did it, I had to unbolt the passenger side exhaust manifold because one of its bolts hit the firewall when I jacked up the engine. You may also want to remove your fan shroud.

Even with all that, it can be very tight, and you may have to put the new pump in the pan, fish the pan between the block and crossmember, then install the pump by feel with the pan setting on the crossmember below the block.

Well, went to the dealership, ordered the new 1-piece gasket, and some new retainers.
Was going to buy the pan if it was reasonable, but at $354.80, think I'll just order one from LMC, or NPD.
They also wanted $12 per oil pan bolt..... Yea...... Ok.....
Also handy to know, the oil pump is discontinued.
So now where do I get one that is reputable?

Check with warehouse services in town for parts. They seem to have good prices for local. I use the company account to get the discount tho.

yea i did the same austin for the gasket and such, i went over to mopac and ordered the new pump, just a regular unit, there was a 25% more high flow unit, but i stayed away from that.
gees, seems like when im over at mopac or JP's im always looking at something, walked out with a few little doo dads for it.
i still think my best bet is over at lmc tho for the pan.
hey when you get your motor mounts best to do it at the same time, and we can do it over at my shop. has a overhead crane to make life easy for us

I got the motor mounts last week. Wasn't looking to do the pan till summer. Might just need the pan gasket. Which would be easy to do. I have forklift at my work too which might work easier then crane as don't need to remove hood

On another note. That thump I was getting I don't get when in 4wd.

I've also been getting pricing on the parts to do the 4:56 swap. Looks like its going to be around $850 for parts. So once i get the refund from the tax man lol

Well order up a gasket, no sense trying to undo motor mounts twice, then I can learn from it.
