Dude, I bought a ford!

Alright so I've been a chevy guy. But recently I traded a 4wheeler for a 77 highboy. Yes, it is a highboy. It has a 400 sb, 4speed, and the divorced 205. It's got a joke of a lift all the way around. The guy just slapped some tubing between the springs and axle and called it good. It has 37's on it so today I decided to play in the mud. Great idea right? It's a beast in the mud. Buried it to the cab. I drove it home. It was fine. Just now I went outside to take my lady friend home. I put it in reverse and it clunks a couple times then the whole front end locked up. It drives forward. It will go backwards if I don't try to accelerate. But if I turn or accelerate in reverse it locks up. So my questions are... Any obvious problems? What gears are in the front ends of these? And what is up with this "power assist"??? Help me switch my opinions to fords.... But right now it's not looking good.

Welcome to FTE.

Obvious problem? Yeah. Congratulations. You've found it already. Is it a T-case issue or a front axle issue? Meaning, does it "lock up" in 2WD?

What front axle ya got? A D44 or a D60? I'll take an educated guess and say 4.10s since it is running 37s and ya didn't complain about being under-geared during playtime.

Read this to address the power assist: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-pictures.html

Yes, this is happening in 2wd. U joints are good. How do I tell the difference between the d44 and d60? As far as knew only the 44's came up front. I was jokin about the power assist, I'm just gonna do away with it and put a direct link in.

You ARE aware if you do away with the power assist ram, you'll have manual steering, right? You can swap to an integrated power box and convert it to the later design.

As far as the reverse problem, it's the trans, t-case, or rear. They could all make those symptoms happen. You need to figure it out. It'll be next to impossible to troubleshoot over the computer. You could try jacking it up so the rear tires are off the ground, then try to make it mess up and have someone under the truck listening to see where the noise is coming from. (use jack stands on a hard surface)

change the rear diff fluid and look for rust on the gears and see if it's an open rear or a closed rear

here is a D60, see the 4 bolts holding the king pin cover on? a 44 will have a ball joint (one big castle nut)

D44 + 37's + 2' of mud = carnage

Something broke somewhere, check u-joints, pull the diff cover, inspect the hubs, etc. etc.

What's wrong with the power assist? totally thrashed? a manual drag link with 37's will not be much fun.

I've been waiting in school patiently, all I want to do is get out and tear that front end down. When I find out what's wrong what would be my best plan? Should I take the time to fix it or put something heavier in its place?

Ok, since youre from chevys i will ask the obvious question here, did you simply shift the t-case to 2wd, or did you unlock the hubs as well?

If it were me id jack the front up with the t-case in neutral and check for binding, if none there, do the same with the rear. If none there i would suspect the t-case.

Also try taking the hubs locks off. Just because they are turned to "free" doesn't mean they are... I had a similar problem and it was a broken turn dial that caused my truck not to move at all.

Depends on what's wrong. Of course we don't know yet because you're waiting for us to diagnose a problem that we know little about except, it was buried to the cab. Then was fine, then locked up.
And if you're back at home about to drive your lady friend home and it clunks a couple of times then the front end locks up I have a question. Were you still in 4 wheel with the hubs locked? What locked up.
Help us help you
BTW welcome to FTE.

I'm not waiting for you guys to diagnose it. I am literally in school, my senior year. I was just hoping to get some things to look for when I get into it at 3:15. I appreciate all the good info.
