Smile different truck????

I am new to this so please excuse any errors. I have a 1998 f 150 4.6 v8 triton. I bought a 26 foot bumper pull trailer. It is 4880#s dry weight. My truck has 120,000 miles on it and was completely serviced. (tranny, rear end, cooling system, brakes and tune up) Do you think this truck will be capable of pulling this RV or should I step up to something with more power?? Thanks in advance. Bob

Not sure what "a bumper pull trailer" is, but at "4880#s dry weight" it should put enough mass on the rear tires to give a little traction. I'd want a 26 foot 4880 lb trailer to be on a frame mounted 2" receiver type hitch at the least.

Was leaving a slightly inclined sandy private drive in my "1998 f 150 4.6 v8 triton" & had to stop for car coming, but it was coming in. When I tried to go my wheels just spun, no matter how gentle the throttle. It wasn't even "capable of pulling" itself anywhere, forcing me to back down & try again w/o stopping.

Needless to say the 5.4L & an F-250 would be more "capable".

I used to pull my 24" enclosed with my race car inside and didnt have a prob.. It depends on how often you are going to pull it... My truck is a 5.4 but I dont think it would be a prob with a 4.6 as long as youre using a mounted hitch...

A chart I looked at for a 1999 F150 shows 5500 lbs as a start for a 4.6l. So i would say it should be good for your trailer with a proper hitch.

You needed to supply more info. Year, cab-reg or scab, engine, trans-auto or manual, 4x2 or 4x4, axle ratio.

Just don't let it jump in and out of OD. I shut my OD off when I pull my construction trailer.

Thank everyone for responding. Sounds like I will be fine as long as O/D is off and I don'.t get stuck on dirt or gravel roads. P S. Hitch was installed by Ford as was the elec. connector.

Take a look at your truck in two places:

Door jamb label for axle code - At the bottom of the label under "Axle", if it is "19", then that is a 3.55 open, a 3.55 limited-slip I believe would be H9.

Rear Bumper - On my f-150, the plastic on the bumper near the bumper ball- mount hole says "maximum tongue weight 500 lbs., maximum trailer weight 5000 lbs."

So you are right up by the max if you are using a ball mounted directly on the rear bumper. But maybe I misunderstand, that by "hitch" you really mean a frame-mounted receiver, which would be the best.

Torky2 The hitch is bolted to the frame, and, I checked the hitch and it is a V5. It shows distribution weight 8700 lbs., whatever that is. Thanks again. Bob

I would purchase and install a transmission temp guage (I'm assuming you have an automatic) and monitor it during a test drive. You have plenty of power but might need additional transmission cooling especially in the summer.
