That's definitely an EFI valve cover, but it still doesn't mean your entire engine is from an EFI truck. Don't the EFI trucks have the fuel pump boss, but it isn't opened up in the center for the cam lever?
They switched to those valve covers in anticipation for going to EFI. The '86 parts truck I bought (which was carb'd) also had a valve cover that had the lowered center in anticipation for an EFI intake.
I've also seen carb'd heads that have the 16 intake/exhaust bolt holes already drilled and only the EFI used those (carb'd heads had 13). The 3 extra bolt holes just sat unused.
The mid 80s 300s were tough to tell if they were original or not since they converted lots (but not all) of the parts to accommodate EFI even before the EFI was introduced in '87.
But yeah, that's the tough part about LIMP mode on a feedback carb'd era 300. They'll drive beautifully, cruise nicely, just be low on power and low on mpg. It've been almost more beneficial if they shut down MORE when something was wrong so that it stood out. LIMP mode was much too gradual.
You'll notice an awesome boost when you either fix the components that have fizzled, or swap out your ignition and carburetor for a pre-feedback era setup.
