I'm changing my "trucker" mirrors for the Sport model. Are the nuts captured in the door...or do I need to remove the door panel..??..and..it looks like the Sport will most likely cover the top holes when the old mirror is removed. Has anyone done this ?..Mine is an '84..Got to spend a little time with Gary Lewis yesterday. He stopped to pick up the bench seat and door pockets from me...since I went with the Bronco items...
I have removed mirrors and been able to replace without removing the door panels.
I also have helped find a rattle in someone's truck. Upon removing the door panel, I found two of the special nuts [barrel nuts?] in the bottom of the door. That was what was rolling when the door was opened. By the way, the mirror was in place and secured with what looked to be newer replacement nuts. This truck had been painted and a dent in the right door repaired. I suspect the nuts were removed/dislodged during that repair!
You should not have to remove the panel, but I have had the bolts get stuck in the inserts, and then the inserts start turning in the sheetmetal. In those cases I end up drilling the head off the screw, taking the mirror off, and then drilling the insert out.
FYI...All he bolts came out readily..Bottom 2 use Rivnut attachment..Top 2 have a plate attached on back of sheetmetal..Nothing fell inside the door..On to Sport mirrors !!
emgee....I can fabricate..but the art of posting pictures escapes me..Ask Chris !!....Email me....vanhornsxs@aol.com...and I'll be glad to help any way I can...j
UPDATE...Decided to get the mirrors from LMC..Arrived today...and seem to be of above average quality...They are all metal..as opposed to the ones on Ebay that have plastic bases...and a bit cheaper than Ebay..The best part..They are made to completely cover the top holes where the "trucker" mirror mounted..and even have the correct fine thread bolts..not sheet metal screws..and gaskets..that fit perfectly...NOW..I need to come up with something to cover the lower 2 holes..any suggestions ? I just put the bolts back in the holes...and painted the heads red..to match the truck...j
Make up some sort of emblem and bolt it in place. Have you guys seen those small chrome letters they sell in Autozone now? You could get a piece of aluminum large enough for your lettering, drill holes in it to match the door holes, and then paint it black or body color. Then stick the chrome letters on there and bolt it in the door.
I don't know what the lettering would say? Engine size? The fender says "f100" or "f150" and "custom" or "lariat" correct?
Make up something good, and we should get some questions on here about. "Have you guys ever heard of a ?"
Like Franklin2, I vote for covering the holes. I believe using a FORD emblem, similar to the one on the grill would look okay. If the one on the 1982-1986 trucks is not large enough (?), then use the larger ones from later model trucks.
You could carefully cut off the plastic prongs and then adhere with black RTV, which would make removal possible without damage.
