Those were the standard mirrors. If you didn't order a mirror upgrade, those are the mirrors you got.

Most of the time, people upgraded to at least the 6x9 low mount swing locs.

Bill, (numberdummy) has told stories of 1000's of the standard mirrors being thrown away. You see the mirrors were not installed untill delivery at the dealer. Most people upgraded, so the standard mirrors got chucked...

That I understand...they look like the same mirrors on my 81. Problem I am having in locating a replacement passenger side one. If he bought them new, I was wondering where from...seems Ford doesn't have any left.

For whatever reason when I picked up my one (yes, one) sport mirror for my truck, I didn't get the bolts to go with it so I had to use the massive bolts from the stock swing-outs. I haven't had it come loose all year, maybe the sport-style bolts are different in their thread design or something?

The bolts that came with the LMC mirrors are the same fine thread .with the STAR head...only smaller to fit the SPORT mirror..Maybe LMC would sell you the bolts ??...

He is talking about the "ball mount" area where the mirror adjusts that likes to come loose. Some mirrors have a little screw where you can tighten that area up, but some of the factory ones do not. When they get loose, that's it.

I had some little mirrors like that on my 86 ranger. It's one of those "stx" models and they were black to match that theme. They had the same problem, each time you slammed the door when you got in, the mirror would move out of adjustment. Even though they were special to the stx truck, they went in the trash. I actually tried to take them apart and tighten them up with no luck. But guess what? I did the exact opposite that you did, and had and extra pair of the larger mirrors off a old f150, and installed them. I thought they would look to big on the ranger but they look good and boy they are better to see out of. Like the original poster, I found the top holes matches up to the factory inserts, and I had to drill the two holes on the bottom.
