This is a great thread and a great subject, and in particular I am LOL'ing at all of the spousal comments and advice. But all kidding aside, there's a lot to be said for instilling confidence in your vehicle, and in yourself for being able to fix just about anything that comes up. And the "Significant Others" appreciate that quite a bit.
Earlier this year, my truck cracked an injector cup while on the first day of a vacation, 450 miles from home. Obviously this was not something I could fix on the spot, but the brethren here at FTE armed me with the knowledge I needed to make the right decisions, and then after I got the truck home, they walked me through making it whole again.
We just got back from making the same trip, and the truck ran and performed like it was brand-new. The alternative would have been taking a regular "passenger car", but it was sure nice to not have to "pack light", and to be able to take a truck bed full of toys and supplies with us, without worry, and still get 18 mpg. The safety factor is nice too.
