Blue Whitish smoke?

I know theres a hundred forums like this about failing injection pumps. Im still not convinced.. I have an 86 f250. i believe 163k 6.9 and new "BB" injectors and new glowplugs. she starts right up, even in 20* weather and no block heater...

thanks!

if you loosen the three nuts that mount the IP to the gear housing, you can rotate the IP a bit. start by marking its position so you know how much you've changed it. rotating the pump toward the truck's right side will advance the timing

a tooth is a crapton of difference, we're talking small adjustments, like half the thickness of a dime worth of movement.
as for needing to advance or retard, start by listening to how it sounds, it should have some clatter just about all the time.
mine always was retarded quite a bit and never smoked except black when giving it too much fuel. recently i advanced the timing somewhere close to where it belongs, and now it smokes like yours for the first minute or two after a cold start, then fades away before the cold timing advance turns off. note that i'm not timed with a meter, so i'm guessing too.

ideally, you'll go buy the ferret timing adapter so you can measure your exact timing and know where to go from there, but thats a few hundred you may not be ready to spend right now.
so the way it sounds will tell what direction to start moving. theres a youtube video thats been linked to several times that has some good tips

Must be one of those trailer trash trucks cursin down the road! LOL

Rollin,

I don't think you're clear on how to adjust your timing. to move your pump, you just loosen the nuts on the back side of it, and turn the pump. Top of the pump to the passenger side is advancing the timing, top of the pump towards the drivers side is retarding timing. Check out these videos.

For no reason at all will you ever move your teeth on your timing gear. this is something you would only need to do if someone mistakenly removed the pump gear cover. See the sticky at the top of the main page for more info on this.

When you adjust your timing by ear, you are basically guessing where it is set at. If you plan to keep your truck for any length of time I highly advise investing in a Feret meter and timing light to do it right, as Josh recommended.

Hope this helps,

Mac.
