Hi, i have an '86 f-250 with a 6.9 non turbo. Will i feel a power difference if i advance the timing on my injection pump, or does it just over-fuel it and pour black smoke out my stacks(although that would be awsome)? One more thing...If i advance the timing, will my fuel consumption go way up(lower mpg's)?

FWIW
I'm new to Diesel's, sounds like you might be too. The thread below will take time to read through but if your willing to put the time in I think you'll get more than your answers.
Most usually these motor get retarded over time, so i would take it to a good diesel shop and get the timing set at 8.5 BTDC pulse method 2.5 ATDC lumonisity. Worked wonders for my truck.
If the injectors are old.. the weak injectors shoot early.. too soon and it fires soon. You may even get a lower end knock which sounds like a rod bearing.
If you advance the timing too far you will burn the tips of the GPs.....
Yes black smoke comes with timing advanced too far and white with retarded too far..
