I've got a 1985 F250 with a 6.9. I have recently purchased this truck and I feel like it is in good shape. I was looking around on the engine and found the 3 nuts to the Injector pump loose. I was reading some of the Great info on this site and I have found the timing marks on the IP and mount area. I aligned the marks and advanced approx. 1 line width and started the engine. It smokes pretty bad and has a miss. What suggestions would you guys have to get this thing in the right.
Thanks,
Chris
The easyest way to set timing is to hot wire the cold start advace then advance it untill it sounds like a power stroke with the coldstart advance on and sounds like an IDI with it off.
The injectors and glow plugs are new. The nuts on the IP were just loose, not coming off of the studs. When I say I advanced the timing a little....I went 1 timing mark to the pass/side. This has just happened because it ran fine 6-7 days ago....which was the last time I drove it before I had noticed the nuts were loose. A diesel mecahanic I know told me to turn IP pump towards the pass/side (while it was running)....untill it knocked. Then turn it back towards the drivers side, just until it quits knocking. He said it would be close, but I wanted a better opinion than close.
hey make sure it is warmed up though because the cold timing advance solonoid could throw you off. there is a way to turn the fuel up and down to through a little door in the side of your stanadyne pump just take the two screws out and put it on tdc and it should show the allen head screw in there clockwise more fuel counterclockwise less fuel but set the timing right first then crank her up so you can smoke out the traffic.
I'll try setting the IP timing tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!!!I am also going to change the CDR valve. I found out it is dirty. Again thanks for all of the info you guys gave!
