Slow timing smoke?

Will having your timing set too slow cause (or contribute to) a 6.9 to smoke when you let off the throttle at 1800 and higher RPMs. I'm just not familar enough with diesels and the noises they make, to feel confident setting it by ear.

I'm planning on doing two things to mine real soon

1) having it dynamically timed by a pro, and
2) having the injectors cleaned and bench tested

Which should I do first?

My old injector and pump combination always smoked until I replaced them. As far a timing goes, all the troulbshooting guides I've seen claim timing thats too retarded will contibute to smoke due too unburned fuel, I suppose the dynamics of a running IP may further retard the timing as you let off the pedal from a given point.
If you've already sucessfully gone through the process of changing your IP gear from being out 180, go ahead and advance the timing for performance improvements. When I put on my new IP I took Dave S's approach, set it up for a preignition type rattle with the cold advance sytem on, but rattle disappears when the cold advance comes off. As it turned out this was with the timing mark at the 12 o'clock postion on the pump being right on, but I think thats how the rebuild shop sets them up.

KJLYPW, could you do me a BIG favor? Would you be able to make and send me 2 sound clip recordings of yours?

1 of it while it is cold and the timing advance is making it rattle, and

1 of it warmed up after the timing advance has kicked off?

I just don't know well enough what one sounds like when it is running good to be able to say that yes mine has a "THE rattle" or no it doesn't.....

I dont think I have the technology to send a sound bite, or if I do I haven't figured it out yet. A post a couple of weeks ago "lets hear em" or something like that had a good bite on it that sounded right to me. Anyway just advance it some try it out. At idle with the advance on you will just start to hear preingniton, just like a gasser, but if you rev it up you will definately hear pre-ignition, then it goes away when the advance cuts off. On mine the differance between this happening and not happening was 1/2 the timing mark, so its sensitive.

Well OK I had to learn something new, I guess my digital camera takes video, (with sound) so send me an e-mail address so I can figure out how to get it to you.

COOL! Send the clips to

cheaper_jeeper@ hotmail.com

If you want to get REALLY fancy about it and make small audio only files, you can separate the audio and video by plugging a cable from the speaker output of the camera to the soundcard input on your computer - and then use the Windows Sound Recorder to record just the audio. Just a thought & something you might want to keep in mind for future use. I'll be happy to get the files whether they are audio only or audio and video combined. I've got Comcast high speed, so large files aren't a problem - unless Hotmail bounces them for being too large.

Thanks again man. I owe you one.

BTW, I was the one that started the "Let's Hear 'Em" thread. Unfortunately only one person posted a link to a sound clip (LaPuente IIRC). The response he got (was it from you?) was something like "that sounds about right if it is warmed up already". I don't recall him ever responding to that comment.

See where my problem lies? I don't know if his was warmed up already or not, so I still don't have a frame of reference for it. I still don't know exactly what "THE rattle" sounds like. That's why I'd love to get two sound clips of yours - one when it starts up cold and the advance is making it rattle, and one after it gets warmed up and the rattle has stopped.

Cheaper hope you got the files OK, maybe you can edit out the audio only and post if you want. The advance on clip, rattle is barely noticeable, but you would definately hear it with the truck in gear going down the road. Good luck.

Well, the files haven't come through. I suspect that hotmail blocked them. If they were over 5Mb, I'd about bet on it. I'll PM you another address that you can send them to - don't want to post it in an open forum though. There are spammers around that harvest email addresses from forums and I don't want my main email box getting shelled with garbage

Thanks again,
Bob

We need to meet up one of these days. Maybe I could even make sure my timing setup is with me.

Oh man, that would be AWESOME! You name the time & place & I'm there!

There is a diesel repair place in my area, but I have no idea whether they are any good or not. I could take it to them, and give them $100, but I wouldn't know if they did it right or not.

YOU on the other hand, I'd feel completly 100% confident that you'd get it right - just from all the good advice & diagnosis you've given me already....
