I was thinking about that, but I am sure if I take the the back out of it and swap that all out it would void any warranty it had..... Maybe I will take my old one apart and go through it before I give it back as my core.... I saw my brother in law has his sitting out in front of his house from when he had the shop install his new $500 "high output" 180 amp alt, that doesn't require a secondary charge wire.... tell me how that works....

it is like you are looking over my shoulder at times.... I am a service tech with a background in service stations and I worked in a electronic supplier house back in the day, for a little over a year, till they told me I was paid "very well for unskilled labor"...... that was the day that I gave my 2 weeks notice and never looked back.

If you have the skill to fix it, what the heck do you need a warranty for?

All you need is parts.

And, parts is parts.......

Alternator install take 2....

I picked up my second "new" rebuilt alt from Napa today, it was the WILSON # 90-02-5139HO that the guys at BBB had recommended. I pulled the "old" new one off, and as I was looking at the new one I noticed this.

It is a Ford Alternator they rebuilt.
Here is another glamor shot.

I started to install it and found it rocked and didn't fit all the way down on the mount... DOH! Oh ya this is a 6.0 alt... a little die grinder action, with a break in the middle for the air compressor to recover and I was back at it..

I had to trim the green insulator so the larger charge wire would fit in the groove. I did NOT have to clock the back of it at all....

Finished

I found out as I was disconnecting the battery grounds today, that I had forgotten to hook up the main battery when I put the other one on. OOPS! So it has been running off one for the past month. Still worked just fine.
I had my wife fire it up and....
SUCCESS!!!

It is charging, and it did it all on it's own at idle, without any "extra" throttle. Momma was Happy, Happy, Happy..

After $400 in batteries over the last 8 months I finally got around to testing my alternator and I'm only seeing 13.3v at max output... Gave me a reason to order that new 250A HD alternator... Too bad powder coating adds another week to delivery...

Other than the "bling factor", how is this alternator better?

Don't just say "more amps", please, unless you USE more amps.

Oh I wish I had that pigtail a while back, that is the adapter that I would have needed to install the early E450 ambulance package alternator.... I am happy with the 200 amp 6.0 alt I ended up with though. I want to get a overdrive pulley for it though.

Just to update, that part number has been suspended. The new part number for this alternator is: 90-02-5139HON. Also this part is no longer listed in the Napa online catalog

I see I never replied to this question! My apologies for such a late response! Yes, it will put out 250A at peak. And YES, I do need more amps. My truck has a bunch of auxiliary lights (with more planned), winch, compressor, 12v refrigerator, aftermarket stereo w/4 TV's, 6 speakers, 4 tweeters, 2 12" subs, 2 600watt amps for the speakers and a 1500 watt amp for the subs. I have a dedicated 200A power distribution block w/10 auxiliary relays and 30 additional breakers to drive my lights and other accessories.

Thanks! After two 160A OEM alternators and 6 batteries in only 2 years, it was an emotional and financial life saver! At hot idle it puts out 170A so it's output is 10A higher at hot idle than the OEM alternator puts out cold at max output! Some of the best money I've ever spent on this truck.

Do you still feel this way, LWW, after another year has passed?

Last month I replaced what looked like original alternators on my 99 F350 7.3 and 00 Explorer (both have over 220,000 miles on them) with "Duralast Gold" Chinese rebuilds from AutoZ.

They have limited lifetime warranty.

Hopefully they will each last another 220,000 miles

That approach has not historically worked out well for most of our brothers. The "lifetime warranty" does not end up meaning that they "last a lifetime" by any means... it only means that if you're rigid about keeping receipts, you can return the broken one for a similar replacement, but most folks end up doing the "lifetime warranty" swap routine about every year or so.

Alternatively, take a Ford OEM unit to a local rebuild shop, let them repair/rebuild your own unit, and you'll end up with much longer life out of the repair effort, and often at a cheaper price.

I hear you and will post here if any news - I keep receipts carefully for this exact reason!

At least they looked very nice and shiny with brand new machined pulleys!

Oh well...
