Frist time on and seeking advice. I have a 76 ford F-150 4x4 Explorer. It has a 360 with a 4 speed and still getting the rest of the information on everything else. I finally was able to start working on it and wanted to just re-seal the engine due to all the oil leaks since the enigine did run. When I pulled of the left side head there was a lot of carbon build up on #2 so took the valve's apart and notice about 1/4 of the valve set was washed out. I know this means new head ut which one can I put. Are 390 heads the same? I'm working on a budget and trying to find what to do?
Thanks
Yes, 390 heads are the same. Your problem probably stems from unleaded fuel. Even though you have the "D2" heads with hardened seats from the factory chances are the valves are shot.
Ford induction hardened the seats to make them compatible with unleaded fuel. This hardening was only a few thousandths of an inch deep. After a couple of valve jobs or just lots of miles this hardening wears down and is no longer effective allowing the valves to burn.
The best thing to do, although not "budget friendly", is to have hardened seats installed in the exhaust and use stainless steel exhaust valves.
Thanks for both your reply's. After looking closer the seat is gone. I guess I will see what is most budget friendly since the engine has 180,000 plus miles on it
the D2 truck heads are a dime a dozen and here in Maine you can buy a pair for 20 bucks... the 390 and 427 had many differing heads,,, do be sure to get a D2 head(D2 are the first two digits in the part code).. call an engine shop and they will help you will little trouble
