ok guys here it is... i am looking at buying a 2006 f350 crew cab short bed 4x4 with a 6.0 in it... i know they have some issues...(who doesn't) anyway my old girl WILL NOT BE SOLD FOR ANY REASON WHAT SO EVER!... but i am thinking about getting this truck it is a really nice one... and the price is not to bad... but i can say once i get this truck i will start my ground up build on the 86... just wondering what everyone thinks? and here is a pic of it!2006_Ford_Super_Duty_F_350_SRW_XLT_4X4_27.jpg
I for one am a 6.0L fan. they are not nearly as bad as everybody makes them out to be. when working on a 6.0L it is uber important to be a technician not just a mechanic/parts replacer. proper diag will find you the issue in no time and you will not wast money on parts that you thought were bad but were perfectly fine. looks like it is at a ford dealer. have them run an OASIS report on it, find out everything any dealer has done to it. recommend an Edge CTS monitor or a scan gauge II from autozone to monitor engine vitals.
your gonna have a hard time getting back into the IDI once you get used to the power of the 6.0L and the sound..........
well i have a buddy who works for the ford dealership that i plan on getting this truck from and he is their main diesel tech. so i can get ford quality work for about the price of a case of beer... lol
You couldn't force me to drive a 6.0. I worked for a company that bought five of them in a fleet, and four of them didn't make it to 100k miles without a MAJOR engine problem, and they all received PM from a fleet mechanic, and the fifth one hasn't reached 100k miles yet! IMO the worst engine ever put in a Ford. Parts cost a fortune and if the check engine light isn't on its because the key isn't in the ignition! If I was going to buy a Powerstroke I would steer clear of the 6.0. Either look for a late model 7.3 or pony up the cash to jump the 6.0 all together.
All five were 450 cab and chassis off of the showroom floor! He bought them new from a fleet purchase center in CA. what was worse, is that with the fleet purchase the max warranty was 3yr, 30K and two of them didn't even get to 30k mi, so at least they were covered. You couldn't even buy the extended warranty on them. Ford must have known something!
my personal opinion about fleet vehicles... (cuz i have worked for a company who owns a ton of them)... chevy, dodge, ford, usually vans but some trucks.... and i was the same way as everyone else its not mine who cares... run the dog **** out of it... and because it wasn't theirs no one cared when it started making any new noise
On the bright side, if it breaks down you have the IDI to tow it home!!!
I had always heard the there were fixes for the issues the 6.0 had and that if they were done then it was a reliable motor. I just like my IDI because it is simple to work on, get decent MPG, can tow well enough for me, insurance/tags are cheap and (best of all) I have no car/truck payment. I don't car that it is slow.....I have my track car if I wanna go fast.
As far as fleet vehicles, how did they do in comparison to other fleet vehicles? Did others break down as well, or just the 6.0?

you heard right, but at the cost of several whole idi trucks.
once you venture past the last 7.3l diesel truck, your better off to go gas again imho.i wouldn't take a 6.0l truck if it was free.well i might if it was free, but i couldn't afford to fix it anyway,so id just scrap 'er or give it to some sucker to fix when she broke lol.
F350 short bed. SHORT BED, yeah i know, don't wanna be so long you can't park, but you can't even carry plywood without having it stick out the back a couple feet. unless you tow with it you can't take advantage of it being a full 1-ton with a bed so small

either you are finding some CHEAP idi's or some REALLY expensive 6.0L parts. You can get a MASTER SOLUTION 6.0L kit for about $1,200. studs, egr delete, oil cooler, ALL top end gaskets.

well this was a guy i know who just had it done at a ford dealership who specializes in bulletproofing the 6.uh oh's.i think it was down in southern end of Maine.it was to the tune of over 7k.iirc though, his turbo needed to be replaced as well,or he just upgraded it then too.of course it's always much cheaper to do it yourself, but who wants to work on a modern diesel engine? can't say i blame him.
they are supposed to be really good at the 6.uh oh work, but they forgot some filter in there (sorry,i don't have much interest in the engine to remember) while they were at it,and it plugged or something and cost him a tow bill and another 750$ to replace it.so not too sure how good they are if they left out a basic like this? i dunno.not an engine with a good track record, well beyond my means to repair let alone build, and not anything i look at and think how enjoyable it would be to tinker on,so i'll never have to worry about 'em lol.

yeah that guy got royally raped. i hope the dealership supplied the vasoline. they are nearly as bad as people make them out to be. you'd be suprised how many peopel actually love their 6.0L. if i had the funds available and a buyer for my IDI,. i would by a 6.0L in a heart beat!
I know a guy that has five he will sell you DIRT CHEAP! you just need an IDI to haul them away! Paper weights! So if I understand the logic here, buy a really expensive motor, that costs a fortune to maintain, and after you treat it well and it breaks down anyway, you can spend another fortune to "bulletproof" the what was supposed to be reliable diesel engine you started with... HMMM? Obviously these are all opinions so they can't be wrong, and I think I have made mine clear, I'll stick with my IDI!
