The plan for my truck was to build a nice stroker so I could put a camper on and tow my Jeep behind it, but my old 390 died 2 weeks ago and I need something to get me by for right now.
Cool
Good luck with your build.
Take a whole shnitload of pics for all of us **** freaks.
Are both engines really 390s or are they 360s?
Checking the stroke of the "new" engine may give you a clue into the integrity of the build.
Don't hate too much on my Chevelle, My mother bought it new in November 1969 and I just finished the restoration. I will pass it down to my son someday

Ha
Just kidding.
Thats the best reason I ever heard to own a Chebbie.
Personally I'd take it apart while it was on a stand and reassure myself that it's Ok.
Then you could re lube everything.
I echo turbo's sentiment, it's already half tore down anyway, sure it's a little more work but the peace of mind you'll gain from doing so is worth it.

With the engine removed from the tranny you can verify the stroke by the crank flange.
Half-moon cut-out is a 352/360
Square Notch is 390
I picked up the engine today, I confirmed it is a 30 over 390 with D2TE-AA heads. What I don't know is compression or cam specs and the guy I bought it from had no clue either, he said the he just called the machine shop and asked for a stock 390 for his 1972 truck, then a week later this engine was delivered to his house. My guess is the compression is 8.0 to 8.5, the piston looks like a small dish with 4 valve reliefs.
Do you guy's think a cam upgrade is worth my time?. I will be running headers and a performer intake I have sitting here
