Buying an '03 F350 Crew Cab DRW with a complete engine rebuild done in '06 for my property. We are buying it from one of the other employees in our company. He said the transfer case has been making some weird noises, so they want to replace it before they sell it to us. His mechanic can't get to it till next Wednesday, which would prevent us from picking up the truck when we are at his branch of the company (5 hours away) this weekend. How hard is replacing the transfer case? Can it be done in a modestly equipped shop with no lift and a little bit of mechanic experience? If so, I'll suggest that he go ahead and send it back here with us this weekend and let us do the work. I already know I can get any parts I need from Tousley...
I have done the swap on an Explorer and Ranger. I think it would be easier
because the F-350 is not so close to the ground. If you can gets your hands on
a transmission jack. It will make you life a lot better than trying to house that
transfer case on a simple floor jack. You don't want it to fall so chain/strap
it to what ever you use to lift it.
Is the transfer case only on a manual or is it also on an auto??? I had thought this was an auto, but can't find any reference to it in the auto section of the Ford service manual...
Anybody got a part number for an ESOF transfer case for an 03 f350 cc drw? My ford manuals show all the numbers for the internal gears and seals, etc, but not the whole thing.
