Weird electrical problem (door locks and dome light)
I have a 1997 Aerostar 4.0L 165k Miles Keyless entry
I am having strange electrical problems. This happens on an unpredictable basis but is getting more frequent (ie. use to be once every couple days and now is happening several times during my 24 mile drive to or from work).
After starting, the car door locks may automatically lock; however, a few seconds later they may lock again, and again, and … This may happen 5-10 times in a row then it stops for 5 minutes or 2 days.
This week a new symptom showed up. The dome light came on while driving. It stayed on for a few seconds then went off. 5 seconds later the doors locked. This may or may not repeat. The light may stay on for 5 or 30 seconds always followed by the doors locking. It may repeat once or sever times in a row. I also noticed if I stepped on the brakes it turned off the dome light and then the doors locked but then it would likely start again. Turning on the headlights did not seem to have any effect.
The keyless entry system key remote most the time is the problem, unless someone went on a wiring job under the dash and pulled something loose. Hard to say without knowing the manufacturer of the system. You might look them up on the internet. See if they have a trouble shooting page.
Was considering the possibility of it being the keyless system but the remote doesn't work if the car is running.
Also it came with the vehicle (ie Ford).
Check under the dash and look for the relay. You can change it out and see if that fixes it. also look for any bad connections loose wires. Also there is PC board chip the size of a match book that plugs into a black housing. If pull it out use a pencil eraser to clean the ends. You can tell if its working by taking leaving it out. The car should not start since thats its job. Then put it back in start then remove it. the car should stay running.
Yes just to the left of the steering wheel, stuffed up under the dash. Find that black holder with the starter kill board in it, all that wiring is the system.
The system is not in the manual. You have to call that 800 number on the window driver side. I tried one time and they are worthless and will not help wirh any parts, even the coded key main board they make. They say take it back to the dealer ford service.

They did it to me sure. I can figured it out anyway.
I does have a good use. You mount that black chip holder down like it should have been with the holder handle and you can take the chip out easier. It kills the whole ignition system till you put it back in.
well I'm glad I don't have that keyless business, I don't trust it. There is nothing like a key.
And now they are making cars with just 1 door lock, no lock on the passenger side door.
I will not buy one like that.

If you have the stickers on either door windows at the bottom, its been installed. You just never got the key fobs for it.
