I recently bought a 99 Taurus SE with the DOHC 3.0. I only paid $350 for it. It has 167k miles. The car is very clean and very straight. When we picked it up, it had problem stalling and a charging problem. Turned out to be a couple of bad vacuum hoses. I also put a new alternator in it (took 2 days, what a pain in the...). Now the car runs great. The engine and tranny run real strong, no issues. Its fully loaded and everything works great. All except for the remote locks and the theft system. Does anybody know anything about this car? I can't find much info about these problems. I tried programming the remote by turning the key on and off until the locks click on their own. This is supposed to reprogram the remote, but it still doesn't work. The batteries are new by the way. As for the keypad on the door, that doesn't work either after doing the same trick with the key. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Otherwise, I'd say it was a steal. I have about $575 invested in it (paid $350, $50 trailer rental, $175 alternator, and a couple of dollars for vacuum hoses). Thanks for reading.
Ive got the same car. Its got about 140,000 on it now. Its been a great car. I believe the owners manual gets into detail about programming the remotes. If you dont have a manual, check out MOTORCRAFT PARTS FOR FORD, LINCOLN OR MERCURY VEHICLES they have them there to read online. I always thought that you hold down the lock and unlock buttons on the remote at the same time and wait for the horn to "toot" saying that it recognizes the remote. If nothing works, i'd say that the security module is faulty. To check that, there is a red indicator light on the dash that flashes "THEFT" when you shut off the engine. If you dont see that there is most likely a problem with the anti-theft module in the car. If you see the light, press the lock button on the door and the light will stay solid and not flash till you shut the door. After a minute or two it will flash every couple of seconds to tell you that the "alarm" is set. It will turn off if you unlock it with the key and then the indicator lamp "theft" will go away. Hope this helps and good luck with the car!
Thanks Mercman. I found the manual on that site. It turns out, the remote had the wrong battery in it. But now there are more gremlins. The remote works now, sort of. It will unlock all the doors. But it will only lock the front pass door. The rear locks kind of wiggle a little, but don't go down. And the front driver's door goes down then right back up. The trunk won't open with the remote and the alarm panic button doesn't work. The red theft light does come on and blinks every couple of seconds. I think the car is possessed!!!
Sounds like what my parents old 96 Explorer was doing. Turned out to be a bad security module. If I were you, as long as the locks function with the buttons in the car, i would just live without the keyless entry if you cant get it to work right.
I have a '99 Taurus SE wagon with the DOHC 3.0 and I love it to death. It's a fantastic road car with excellent manners and great MPG's.
The only issue that I've had actually just started yesterday. the climate control has gone nuts on me. When I select ac or max ac, hot heater core air blows out but the compressor is running. I'm thinking that I have a bad switch in the dash pod as it isn't telling the blend door to shut off the heat and allow the cold air to come in.
I agree, its a great car even thought we just got it. It drives real nice and has plenty of power. We got it real cheap because the previous owners thought it needed big repairs. But after a few simple, cheap fixes, its a great find. I can live with the remote/alarm issues. But my wife would really like the trunk remote to work. Oh well.
