I am helping my neighbor with his 86 f150. 300 six, 4x4 pretty much stock.
He bought a new clutch master cyl and put it in today. Couldn't get it to work.
I went over to help out and went over everything in the system and my conclusion is that it has a lot of air in it. I'm scratching my head because there is no bleeder on either the master cyl or the slave cyl.
Going to "the book" I read that the system is serviced as a single unit, comes assembled full of fluid and bled at the factory. So you are supposed to buy the whole thing from Ford like that. Autozone didn't get the memo and sold my buddy the master cylinder alone.
Who's got a scheme for bleeding this clutch? Anyone?
I've read that there is an allen head bleeder screw on the slave cylinder, and I've also read that the procedure is to take the slave cylinder in hand and manually move the piston through its travel with the hydraulic line pointed upwards. Might be worth a try?
Thank you Eric, I will look for the screw. And the manual displacement method should work, I guess.
My concern is that the larger problem is in the master cylinder. I pumped the pedal while my friend held the line pointed upright blocking the end with his finger. The master could barely pump enough to push past the pressure of his finger.
