OK ehat's the trick? E4OD Pump seating

I am about at my wit's end trying to get the pump seated evenly (by hand) in an E4OD transmission. The transmission is hanging from a shop crane with the bell housing pointing up I am using the guide pins so alignment is not a problem it practically drops in by itself.

The problem is not quite all the way. I have spent the better part of three days on this with the same results. Any suggestions?

Is the torque converter the same one used with the transmission? Each type uses a slightly different scheme to drive the oil pump: the hubs on the converters are not alike, in either diameter or pump drive tangs, from one trans to another.

Could you have the wrong converter?

I'm not that far into the process, just trying to seat the same pump that came out of it.

No I made sure not to even poll the torque converter until I had that tranny dangling from the crane. Nothing fell in or out.

He's talking about something inside the trans, not the torque converter. Something inside is not seated properly, so that the innards are up too high to let the pump seat all the way.

you didn't put the filter back in right? lol might be good to start with the basics.that has to be out for pump removal/insert first of course.
as long as no gears fell out when you pulled the pump, then you only need to insert the bolts and gently start snugging them down.it will pull the pump nice and easy.just be careful.if somethings not right, you'll know it.use a rubber mallet and tap as you start snugging down.she'll seat.
why did you remove the pump in the first place? was it to install an upgraded boost valve? if so,when you split the pump case, did you get the pumps half's lined back up perfectly?

I removed the pump to replace the seal & bushing, it was worn. The seal had been split by whoever installed it. I think the answers here may have solved the problem, could the old rubber filter gasket be hanging me up? Because I think it's still in there.
