E4OD torque converter removal

Hi Folks,

I have been searching for some hours now with no luck on this one.

I pulled the E4OD out of my 1996 7.3 f250 to replace a leaking pump seal, but I cant get the danged torque converter to pull out of the trans.

Is there a trick to this I'm missing? Plan tomorrow is to build some sort of puller, but I'm not sure how far that will get me.

Any advise/tips are greatly appreciated, Im in a time crunch and running out of options.

Thanks!!

You simply pull it out with your hands, is it stuck? Just remember its a heavy sucker and you need both hands to pull it out.

x2, should slide off, make sure you're pulling it straight out because I guess it could bind up on the pump shaft? Or maybe it's gaked

Wow. That means your bushing didn't only spin in the pump (probably ruining your pump) but it heated up and melted onto your converter. You'll probably need to put some prybars behind two sides and VERY,VERY carefully, pry, shake and jiggle the converter along with the now deformed bushing to come out of the pump.
CAUTION!
Be careful not to break your case!!!!!!!!! If in doubt, take it to a trans shop.

You'll be able to clean up and save the converter probably and maybe even bore the pump to accept another bushing but you'll need to pull the pump, split it,inspect and measure the bore to know for sure.If in doubt take the pump to a shop to have repaired for you or just order a reman on ebay.
(make sure to remove the filter or pump can't come out and make sure to stand trans upright or parts fall out from behind pump and are very hard to put back in!)

The bushing no doubt walked forward before it deformed, causing the major front leak.If so,this ruins the lip on the pump, there are ways to insure the bushing can't walk again but it's not as good as a reman pump and depending on what you find and trans shop pump repair,it's probably way cheaper and easier to just install a reman pump.Post pics of the pump once split apart if you want help trying to repair it.

Dang I'm curious to know too.... I just smoked something in my "built trans" and had to pull it out again this weekend but everything went as normal and the converter just pulled right out smoothly.

Simple, don't forget to remove transmission filter before removing pump
