When you insert the lift pump arm into the block, tip the pump so that the arm is pointing down. That will ensure that youre under the cam eccentric and you do not damage the lift pump.
what he said about sliding it in. then with it in place but not screwed in yet, you should be able to feel yourself pushing against spring pressure trying to make the pump sit flat against the engine. if you don't feel that, you'll have to ask why, because you should feel that.
also, put a bit of grease on the top of the pump arm where it will ride on the camshaft.
i remember when i did mine it was easy getting it bolted up to the engine, but a bit of a fight attaching the steel line screws into it. i might suggest starting that connection before the pump is screwed tight to the engine
