Paste the address at the bottom into your browser and watch the video. From what I know, it's a little more complicated to "get it right" than just adjusting based off the sound of the motor. There is a significant difference in performance and fuel economy from say 5 deg BTDC and 9 deg BTDC, but you won't be able to hear the difference in the way the engine sounds. There's also several other good threads on this topic. Just do a search. Folks way smarter than me have some good stuff to say about ip timing.

There is so much more you can do than just timing, its rediculous... Especially if you have no pump warranty to void.

Just tinker with everything, there isnt much you can do to mess anything up, all you have to do is remember where you started, and worst case, set it back.

More timing is going to result in less smoke/more top end power, less timing is going to result in better spool/more torque... The number isnt as important as is driveability... Just tweak it until its where your satisfied...

If you want a little more RPM, turn the screw at the backside of the pump (above the head) inward... If you want more fuel, adjust the max fuel screw(in)/torque screw(out)... The advance cam can make a difference, basically determines when the timing starts to retard, adjusting this can tune where you want max efficiency as well as max torque/power... And these are just things externally...

Adjusting the pump yields huge dyno proven gains... Its best if you can adjust things on a dyno, but if you cant, adjust things based off of drivablilty... If you notice a difference (either good or bad) chances are you have made a difference in power made... Just tune it out to your satisfaction, thats the only thing that matters anyway...

I don't have a timing meter and i have called around an not a single place has one. Which way do i turn the pump to advance it? And i have heard about the torque screw but idk if i have one. If i did id be afraid to mess with it

Turn the pump toward the passenger side to advance timing.

IF you have the torque screw on your pump then you loosen the lock nut and take a 1/8" allen wrench and back the screw all the way out.

Racin, as long as we're on the subject, I'm going to do a buddies timing soon and hopefully mine as well. Using the advance cam or anything external, is it possible to retain a more retarded setting to get the boost coming on soon and have a little more advance for the top? It doesn't matter so much for me as it does for the other rig as he's got an old non-gated Banks. His should have a torque screw as the motor came out of a serpentine 92; mine doesn't.

it won't have a stop on it. just back it out until the screw is out about 1/4 inch. that will essentially make it like an IP that doesn't have the torque screw.

I wonder if their is a way to manipulate the timing advance to give more retarded timing at low RPMs to help spool the turbo and advance the timing on the high end to help with horsepower?
