I have a 1999 ford expedition eddie bauer. When I got the truck it was filled up and it read 428 miles to empty, now when I fill it up it says 386 miles till empty. Which is right?
Probably both. I think the mileage to empty shown just after filling the tank is based on the average mpg on the last tank, until you begin driving and a different mpg is established. There are times when I have been towing my trailer, store it, go fill up, and the miles to empty increases for several miles even as I am using fuel. In other words, if your were using gas at 10 mpg on the previous tank, fill it up, you should read 280-290 miles to empty. If you start using the next tank at 12 mpg, it will adjust before long to account for the better mileage. Always reset the average mpg at each fillup, or it will average the previous mpgs in.
Not too long ago, somone posted that when filling up, you should employ the 3-click method! That is, while fueling, if using a nozzle with a trigger lock, let the tank fill with lock engaged and after it "clicks" the first time, carefully continue manually filling (dont use trigger lock) until it clicks 2-3 more times. If you dont mind spending slightly more at the pump, you can usually get another 2-3 gallons in the tank with this method.

You have to be careful though - apparently the Ford tanks are designed with a little dome in the top to allow for expansion/vapors. If you overfill the tank, it'll saturate the little emissions vapor canister thingamajig. I don't really know what it does, but apparently saturating it is a bad thing. I personally pump the gas full on until 1 click, and then full on to clicks 2 and 3. Then I squeeze a bit more in to round it up
