OK first off I am new to the sight... had been lurking since yesterday since "Bertha", 2001 F250 5.4L, started giving me some lip.. So I've noticed over the past week a slight sputter ( if thats what you'd call it ) when accelerating. Once up to highway speeds, 65-70, it wasnt noticeable. So I thought I had got some bad fuel or something and thought " just run it out and get some treatment for the next fill up". Well that didnt go so well. I was coming home and the truck just lost power, sounded like it wasn't firing on all cylinders and had a jerk to it. The service light never came on at all!!! I went yesterday and got a scanner and the following 4 codes popped up... P0354 ignition coil d primary secondary circuit malfunction, P0355 same, P0356 same, P0358 same... Truck has 160k on her so its probably time to replace the coils but is that normal to lose 4 with no service light? Also found a company in Cali that sells 8 coils for a very low price of $90 plus shipping... should I be concerned of such a low price? Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice!!!
I've heard of the early trucks doing that. Not sure why. I'm sure someone might know.
But everyone seems to agree to stay away from aftermarket COPs. I've read more about bad aftermarket COPs issues then anything else with them. Stick to OEM on those.
Thanks Mike! Now the only thing is with Christmas around the corner... a $450 part bill just wont fit my budget... The local parts store has them with a 15% deal so 4 would set me back $215 plus tax... You think I be safe with replacing the 4 that are throwing the codes or should I find a way to replace all 8? After Christmas I can do the other 4 no problem... plus I have another vehicle so wont have to drive the truck much at all until then...
Thanks for all the advice. I went ahead and ordered 4 motorcrafts for $235 delivered tomorrow... so Saturday me and small fry will tackle the job... Any pointers or advice on the swap? Things to watch out for?
If you didn't get them you will probably need the boots. If your boots are real bad when you replacethe COPs you should think about replacing them all in the near future. Those could also cause a miss.
Ok guys coils came in yesterday so today me and small fry jump on it. Had to replace coils 4, 5, 6 & 8. I did coil #4 first since I was going to tackle this without removing anything out of my, like the fuel rail etc... I admit it was a tight spot but about 10 mins it was out and replaced. # 8 was another tight spot but not nearly as bad and #5 and #6 were a breeze! Total job took aboutt 30 mins and she is running like a champ!!!!!! As soon as Christmas is over Ill be replacing the other 4 along with the dreaded plugs... Thanks again for the advice and you now have another member for life!!
Glad to hear that your truck is running well, but something really smells here to me...
I find it virtually impossible that all four COPs will go out simultaneously. It just doesn't make any sense that half your COPs will go dead. Proper troubleshooting is critical before buying parts, and in this case it really sounds like you threw the parts store at the problem without doing any diagnosis.
The Ford factory shop manual has diagnosis information that I can't post here, but I can say that if P0356 is present the FIRST THING to check is the camshaft positioning sensor. A bad sensor could cause all of these codes, and is far more likely IMHO than four independent parts simultaneously failing. I don't want to call anyone out here, but I have a real problem with folks being advised to throw money at the coils whenever there is a misfire. I've seen lots of folks with over 200,000 miles on here with the original COPs. My Excursion is running flawlessly with original COPs at 115,000 miles. None will be replaced until they fail, and even then I'll be replacing individual failed parts rather than all of them.
cksetzer, I honestly hope that your problem was fixed by your four new COPs. Please post back if you have any more troubles and we'll try to help.
Thanks Crazy, yeah I agree it does sound wierd and to my defense I didn't throw the parts store at I threw a code scanner at it and asked for advice from here and friends in the trade. Scanner read 4 coils, everyone said replace the coils, 4 coils replaced and problem was fixed... as of the scan and test drive following... Now if the problems arises again I will def be back to hit you guys up for possilble diagnosis... Thanks again!
I went through the same thing with my 2003 F250 about a year ago. Started sputtering and misfiring, but no check engine light came on. Brought it to autozone and found it was cylinder #3. I went ahead and changed all my plugs, but put the same coils back on except I put the #3 COP on the #1 cylinder. Ran great for 7-8 months and then the same thing happened. Had it scanned at autozone and this time it was cylinder 4 misfire. I pulled the plug and wire brushed it and then swapped the #4 COP with #3. Been running great for the past 4-5 months. I think the COPs figure a way to get loose.
One thing to keep in mind when looking for parts is Tousley Ford Parts Depot
They are a site supporter and you most likely will
get a much better price from then than anyone else.
That is if you don't count the Chinese junk parts that you
find on Ebay and some of the local auto part stores.
