While driving tonight all of a sudden the driving started to get rough. I felt shaking while stop and when apply gas. Then the service engine soon light came on then after a few minutes it started to flash. Any ideas? I'm going to make an appointment to see what's wrong but any opinions would be helpful so I don't be to surprised when I take it in.
A flashing service engine light usually means a missfire. Do not drive it very much with that happening as it is dumping unburned fuel into the converters and can ruin them. The most common suspects are a leaking heater hose over the number 4 cop (if you have them) and causing it to short out the cop. Otherwise they do just go bad and they can charge you an arm and a leg for them if it is a ford dealer.
Yes, you have a severe misfire. In such a case, the computer shuts off the injector for the misfiring cylinder so it doesn't flood the cat. However, there is still a risk so get it repaired ASAP.
The shop will need to scan it to see which cylinder(s) is misfiring. You can plan on at least one coil and spark plug. Chances are, they will recommend replacing all 8 plugs which is, labor-wise, time consuming and expensive. Additionally, chances are they will screw something else up and it will cost you a fortune to repair your truck the week before Christmas.
If you were to do the work yourself (doesn't sound likely), you could fix it for around $60-70 in parts. Plan on a minimum of $300 at a shop for a simple repair.
If you need further assistance in diagnosing, post the year, model, and engine. There are significant variations and we ain't psychic.
Depending on where you live, AutoZone mand other parts stores will read your fault codes for free so you can determine up front what is likely wrong. If you avail yourself of this service, WRITE DOWN THE FAULT CODE( Pxxxx) and come back here for advice before proceeding.
Thanks guys for your help. I had the truck looked at two days ago and it was my fuel injectors that were bad. I had them replaced which costed 600 with labor. Is that a reasonable price? I'm think they may have been going bad for a while cause I only had the truck since July and I never felt as it accelerated right. I really didn't know how to judge since this was my first SUV and I don't drive it that much except now that it's winter.
