Ok, so weve had shifting problems with my wifes 07 mountaineer with the 6 speed auto. Took it back to the deaLer 3 times and everytime they say its a coil. So I replace each coil they tell me is bad with new accel coils and it still shifts horrible. So shes driving home the other day and going up a small hill and it makes a bang and the wrench light comes on for a second then it shifts. Seems to mainly happen around 50 mph. Well we took it to advanced auto to have it scanned and they say they cant scan it if the check engine light isnt on. Now the warrenty has expired. SOOO...
1. Do I call my dealer and demand them to fix it even though its out of warrenty
2. Call Ford headquarters and bitch
3. Can I buy a scanner and scan it myself without the cel on?
First off, whether its coil or not still needs to be discovered, but ACCEL COILS ARE JUNK. I've used them before, they are just plain garbage. MSD coils are better, marginally. These are designed for high output race conditions, but at the cost of reliability. They also output a lot more electromagnetic interference, which can mess with other electronics in the vehicle, i.e. it messes with the signals that the computer uses to make decisions.
If you want the best coils from a reliability, price, and performance standpoint, the original Motorcraft coils are the best bang for the buck. The cheaper aftermarket ones, are just that, cheaper, and the performance ones are also cheaper. You vehicle is 5 years old, I'm assuming the coils have lasted the better part of that.
Despite this, you need to take it to a transmission shop that is reputed for their diagnostic skills. Why, because if this is a transmission issue, they are better equipped to handle it than the dealership, and if it is an engine issue, they are better equipped to diagnose it, since they often run into engine management issues that seem to be a transmission issue.
How do you find a good transmission shop?
BBB ratings is a good start, then find a shop that is locally owned, preferably family owned, with the owner on site.
