how do I find a boost leak?

I think I have a boost leak that is keeping me from realizing the full potential of my new MTW stage 1 turbo. I'm only seeing ~20psi with stock tuning, my EGTs are 200 degrees higher than the stock turbo, and the truck just doesn't have the expected seat of the pants performance increase.

How do I go bout diagnosing this? I had all of the boots replaced with Riff Raff boots when the turbo was installed. I need to try and figure this out ASAP as I have a 250 mile one way trip pulling 8k lbs this coming weekend.

If you have an A/M turbo chances are you will need a custom tune.

Already have a custom tune. Everyone I talk to about my issues suggests that a boost leak is the most likely cause.

The EGR is turned off via the tune and has been for the past almost two years. I'll check it out, but it shouldn't be causing any issues.

Check the up pipe, it can be a pita to seat at the turbo. Snug it to the turbo then the manifolds. soot is a tell tale but its hard to see anything back there. Soapy water on the cac connections will show any leaks on that side with a helper building boost. A dealer can do a smoke test IIRC

I'll take a look at that tonight and see if I see any evidence of leakage in the exhaust. Would I be able to hear anything if it were leaking here?

Hear, not so much, this motor is way too loud to hear it, mine leaked too after installing my powermax, it has to be perfectly aligned were talking an 1/8 gap will give problems, the clamp will not pull it in. Another thing that gave me a clue was I could smell diesel exhaust when putting on the a/c.

Sometimes you can hear it hiss but usually the diesel "clatter" is too much. You might use a flashlight with all lights out and have someone blip the throttle to detect smoke. The easiest repair (for me) is to loosen the y-pipe bolts at the exhaust manifolds, position and clamp the y-pipe at the back of the turbo first, then retighten the y-pipe to exhaust manifold bolts because they are WAY more forgiving connection wise. This also tends to destress the y-pipe.

If you have a plastic cold side CAC tube it can crack or get holes rubbed in it by the hydroboost line. You have to pull air filter to inspect. The corrugated part near the front is a common area. ( just somthing else to check )

Two holes in this one.

hook a gauge up to it. do not use the boost gauge on the dash. this is per matt at gear head. the tunes are now messing with the boost readings.

Im had the same issue bro. I split the flex joint part of the exhaust ypipe to turbo while i was deleting my egr up pipe. I found out i split the mesh from ear to ear (one side of pipe to the other). Sitting at idle and i stuck my hand back behind turbo and it was like a fan was blowing hot air from it. Smelled exhaust under hood. The turbo got absolutely no exhaust to make boost at all. So im waiting on that pipe and shell be back on road with new oil cooler no egr and a clean turbo. Unplug your MAP hose and stick a toothpick or somethin in make sure its not clogged. Good luck!
