Hoe exactly do the fuel gauges work, are they on a float system? I ask because my fuel gauge was acting a little funny today. I filled up yesterday and put about 70 miles on the tank so far. Earlier today it read 3/4 at about 60 miles now at 70 it is reading past the F. What could be going on here?
It is a float. Using variable resistance for tank level indication.
You could check the connections at the top of the tank if you wanted to check for a possible loose connection or bad ground, but also consider your trucks attitude, as in parked on slopes, etc.
Yesterday the gauge started to read where it most likely should after going 120 miles. It was reading just over 1/2 a tank. Now this today it is reading full again. Do I have to drop the tank to get to the wires?
The float is inside the tank, but your symptoms don't prove it's a bad sender. There is a wire that goes up to the overhead that's far easier to get to (if you have an overhead), and there is one behind the dash that's more complex, but the work is not as dirty. You could set it up to get a voltage reading (like a wire tap to within easy reach) and check the voltage when the gauge berzerks. If you really want to get into it, research and prep for a Hutch mod, then check your sender while you're in there. Any time a tank has to drop, that Hutch mod should be first priority.
