This is a complete drop in from Jasper which included the fuel system. The fuel system is out of warranty. Only has 9000 miles on it. Has two new batteries and a new set of Beru (Manual) GP's
Engine starts great from cold but after trying to restart it on a warm engine it starts and stumbles and stalls. Just like air intrusion symptoms except that it would do the same from a cold start if it was air in fuel.
Tried the cool water trick on the IP and it started and stumbled for a bit until it smoothed out. It certainly seems like its the IP but after only 9k it seems unlikely.
Cranking is real fast so I know there's nothing wrong with the starter. In the morning in the high 20f it spins and starts in less than 2 seconds.
Thoughts?
Could be air intrusion, with something like cracked/porous/leaking O ring filter head that opens up when hot to allow air in.
Also possible sticking/bad fuel selector valve?
I have heard some sketchy stuff about some rebuilders, and i think Jasper is one of them. They dont "rebuild" they just replace what was broke. In that case, could very well be that your pump is not rebuilt, and has a bad head/rotor. Out of warranty in under 10k miles? To me that would be an indicator of quality.

The engine is two years regardless of mileage and the fuel system is one year. The pump has a brand new Stanadyne plate on it the same as MWFI puts on theirs.

If that were the case then fuel would drop back and I would lose prime. Prime would still remain lost next morning when the engine is cold but it isnt because it starts right up from dead cold.

I thought of that too but why only when the engine is warm especially sine the valve is remote from the engine?
Just because its a rebuilt IP doesnt mean its a good pump....We all know there is no Q in quality anymore.
my 2c's
I suppose my logical, next question would be. Are there any visible signs to look for like a fuel leakage? I did notice a little "sweat" just below the pump on the valley pan.
I havent been into diesels that long but I dont think the IP has any spots it can leak from unless its a line but I may be wrong....Have you checked your fuel pressure?
you can get a liquid / air pressure gauge for tires, and check at the schrader valve on the FF head. Should see about 4lbs.
So an ordinary tire gauge won't work?
IPs can leak at the advance plunger on the side as well as the throttle arm.
Not seeing any signs of a significant leak. Although I did notice a little "sweat" in the valley pan which has now been washed away from the water test. I'll keep my eye on that.
an ordinary tire gage won't read 4PSI, and may or may not be able to handle getting wet with fuel. but the fitting is the same. but i doubt you have a fuel supply problem, it sounds more like an issue in the IP
So this morning I check the filter and its half full which suggests air intrusion. So I fill up the filter with fuel and its starts right up and we run 10 miles. Shut down at the job and work for three hours then go for a break. Truck starts great and we drive 4 miles to an eatery. Shut down and come back after 45 minutes and she starts but stumbles and grumbles until I feather it. Drive back to the job, do another 4 hours work then she starts right up fine again. Weird
Yep thats a sure sign of air intrusion, Due you have a full tank? Try filling it to the brim and see what happens over night I have a leak when I get below 12.5-13 gallons...
