1987 injection pump problem

Truck starts and runs cold. Once truck is warm and I try to drive it dies like it’s starving for fuel. Truck has a new electric fuel pump, and maintains good pressure through fuel filter at motor. Fuel pump is wired to the 12v constant for the injection pump, an ideas on what might be causing the fuel starving?

It could be the fuel shut off solenoid, when it dies how long does it take before it starts?

If it takes a while crack an injector line when you crank and see if its pushing any fuel, it should be a good squirt. If no fuel is coming out either you're getting air in the system or the shutoff solenoid is failing when warm. Which is pretty normal for electronics to do funky things when hot.

You could also try the cool NOT COLD water trick and pour it on the rear of the ip and see if it fires up. When the main rotor wears out they normally give trouble starting hot.

there could also be crud in the fuel tank blocking the pickup. then when the engine dies, it falls down only to get sucked back up once engine is restarted and you start driving again.

Tanks were pulled and cleaned in the rehab process. New online and primary filter at the motor. Leaning toward an electrical problem with the ip.

I’ll try the cool water trick to see if that helps, really hoping it’s not the op.

does the 87 still have the Rubber flex plate holding the governor weights ??

bad governor can cause the issue you have, I haven't rebuilt any injection pumps since the early 80's

we used to pull the return check valve off the pump and look for contamination to discover this issue.

Just a guess

I’m not familiar with the internals ofan injection pump, but I am talking to a diesel specialist tomorrow. I’ll ask him those questions.
