Random choke and rough idle

H guys

I am hoping you guys might be able to help me with an annoying problem I an having.

Over the past few months I have felt like my truck is running a little rough at idle, also randomly maybe one a Month I notice the engine will die for just a split second, and it happens at any speed, I was sat idling today at the lights and it did it again,.

It feels just like the ignition goes off then back on really quick, the engine does not stop just a quick choke.

Truck is a 2002 7.3 F250.

Thanks

What is your mileage, etc.? Have you done anything to it, CPS for instance?

My truck has 190000 klm's on it I think that is just over 100000 miles.

It has a DP tuner, WW, fleet filter air intake, AIH delete, tightened up waste gate,. And that's it for the engine, nothing else has ever been changed except the oil and filter every 6000 klm's.

Thanks

Try a search for CPS, cam (or crank?) position sensor. Something that gives a lot of problems on the 7.3 motor. Fairly easy to replace, 25-30 dollars. Most of us have a spare in the glove box.
Hopefully a few more will chime in. Also check the first couple of threads when you sign in, should have common problems listed.
Good luck.

I believe just by reading the OP that it is CPS related......but it would not hurt to check that the tin nut is tight on you Injection Pressure Regulator (IPR).

Well today I had FORD replace the CPS as I have had the recall notice on my desk for a few months now (I hate the site of my truck disappearing through a door for god knows who to work on it, actually asked them if they would just give me the new sensor for me to fit but they wouldn't, first and last time ford touch my truck. It took them like 1.5 hours to change the CPS

PersonallyI actually think the truck idles even worse than before, and when I run it at 1100 high idle on my DP you can really notice the unsteady idle now.

I also received my new IPS today from RiffRaff so I installed that, I didn't notice any difference at idle BUT, I took it for a run and I felt a noticeable difference in the performance, the truck feels somewhat more lively.

SO what would you guys suggest next, its really bugging me, especially when I use the High idle tune, but even at traffic lights etc I can constantly feel this slight unsteady idle, its like a very faint miss and a very very small bump up and down, just enough to see the tach needle move if you look carefully.

Thanks

Do you get any kind of Service Engine Soon (SES) Light or just rough idle?
I guess by IPS that you meant to say IPR????
Take the Injection Control Pressure (ICP) wire off of the sensor and look into the electrical plug on the sensor. Is there any oil in the sensor?

Look at each and every boost boot that you have. Can you build a boost leak test pipe and apply 20 psi on the system to check for leaks?
Have you ever pulled your Exhaust Back Pressure Sensor off and shoved a coat hangar wire or weed eater wire into the supply tube all the way to the supply inlet on the passenger side exhaust header? Trey in this video removes the tube but if it is not very bad then you can just remove the sensor and push the before mentioned items into the line to clear it.

If it seem like it is surging a little then maybe you should pull your intake piping and inspect your turbo compressor wheel for impingment and wear/damage. Maybe you can take a video of what your truck is doing and post it so we can hear and see it. Make sure it is taken where there is not a lot of extra noise like in the rural areas away from town. Post the video to youtube and send the link to us in your next post.
I don't know what else to tell you except to talk to Jody at DP tuners about your issue.
Have you done the 50 cent mod? Dude, work on your signature so we know how many miles by looking at any post and what mods you have done and what mods are sitting on your bench to be installed at a later date. Go to User CP. Click.
Go to settings and options and click on edit signature. Type in the box the mods you have done to your truck seperated by a space or comma or period. List your current number of miles on your truck and update the miles and mods once in a while. Then when we see your post we will not have to ask you for that info because it will be in every post you make.

No I dont get a SES light.

Sorry Im not sure where my brain was at when I put IPS I actually meant ICP, I replaced it as there was oil in the plug.

I do believe I have a couple of small boost leaks as there is oily mess around the boots, I have them on the todo list but dont want to spend the cash at the moment, spent quite a bit on it lately. May I ask why that would cause a rough idle.

I have cleaned the EBPS and tube a little while ago though I may do it again, I dont think it has really been long enough but cant hurt to do it again.

I have just installed a new WW at 194000 kilometres, and the old wheel was also perfect.

I havnt done the 50 Cents mod but have thought about it, as I have AUD can anyone send me a couple quarters

I cant really send a video as you cant really hear it as much as you can feel it in the drivers seat, and the needle only just moves a tiny bit every now and then, but I will see, if I get a moment when it is at its worst I will whip out the phone and try to get a vid.

Sorry about the sig, been meaning to do it for ages, anyway I have now done it so it should be working.

Thanks 1fixitman
