It makes it alot easier going threw the inner fender to get at the starter. As long as your ok with peeling the fender back. Also I've had headers forever and have never had any kind of heat problem with the starter. Drag raced for 2 years and still running strong after 6.
BBB beat me to the one issue I thought of, steering box clearance. I have the "short" steering box (or so I'm told by others far more knowledgeable than I). But from what I've seen FPA have the best fit and you can talk to someone (I spoke to a Stan) and tell them exactly what you are doing , what heads you have the port sizes, and I imagine any other issues such as steering gear clearance, etc. I don't think the Tranny type has much bearing as it sits well inside engine plane behind bellhousing. Good Luck
I asked, because my Dynomax, exhausted directly into the c6 tranny linkage. I had to reverse the tranny linkage rod and bend it slightly so that I could plumb up the exhaust pipes.
We finally got my Hookers in place, along with the stock size starter. It was no easy task, though. Had to lift the 390 and work the starter and headers in at the same time. Major pain. Said probably ten times or more that it wasn't gonna work! But thankfully it did. Only thing that bugs me is that I never did get the heat shield for the starter. Oh well, maybe I won't need it. I sure ain't gonna pull it all back off just for that.
Sorry I'm not much help, I haven't had the pleasure of doing much of the wrenching on this phase of my truck. Had the pleasure of changing starter on old Blackjacks though and I know that I didn't unloosen the engine on passenger side like youre supposed to and spent far too much time cussing and sweating because of that. Amazing what even an 1" can do for that job.
I never had any problems with linkage clearance with FPA (I am also using a Lokar floor shifter-that may have helped).
FPA does have his headers out from the engine more than ones I've used and that may be why. (so much that the shop did make a 3/16" clearance cut on top rail of frame on pass. side-just to be safe for when the engine was idling). His also uses the modern ball type collector (Instead of wider Three Bolt).
