noisey power steering pump
I'm sure if you do a search you can find a thread on quieting the system down.
They also make a power steering fluid.
Turkey baster or small liquids drill driven pump works well to remove old fluid.
I changed my fluid to synthetic Mercon Mobil 1 and added the Lube Guard.
Quieter now than when new.

Thanks for the info! I replaced my Aerostar's power steering fluid with Red Line's PS. No problems, and it quieted the sound made with those PS pumps (A Ford trademark, you can hear and idenify immediately), but it did not eliminate the whining/moaning PS sound. Is it true, that some Aerostars could be ordered with a special power steering pump with a mini-cooler which can be seen as part of the pump? (Police car V8s were standard with this type). Thanks again 96_4wdr for the tip on Lube Guard. I just checked out their website. Ed
My '96 awd 4l does have a power steering cooler, about 3 loops of tubing across in front of the air cond. condenser, must be in low pressure side. Would be easy to add a small tranny cooler to low pressure return side.
