Installed a remanufactured power steering pump when doing the power steering conversion on my '69. It is very noisy particularly when turnng at low speed (more load I guess). I first filled it with Valvoline synthetic fluid but flushed it and replaced with Type F ATF to see if it would quieten down. No success. Is this the nature of the beast or is it just this pump? Do you think a pump from a different rebulder would make any difference? Do they get any quieter with a few miles? I don't have any experience with these '70s vintage pumps but can't help but feel this is way too noisy. You could shift by pump noise alone. Thanks for any advice.
I agree with Jim, Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak is the product name as copied from their site. As little as 1/4 bottle came make a difference in a noisy pump.
Lucas is a bandaid fix as it has solvents that soften and swell the rubber seals.
When they evaperate away the leak will return and be worse. Air trapped in the system will make the pump noisy but should go away in a few miles. If it's still growling the pump is worn or has scores. Your better off rebuilding your old pump, the pulley puller and bushing driver are the only special tools needed. Rebuild kits are cheap, get the one with the shaft bushing included. I would exchange it or get another from Pick-N-Pull then rebuild. A good pump shouldn't make any noise or growling.
