Hubs not locking - Auto?

OK, just to make sure I am under the right impression. I have the front wheels set on Auto and when engaging the 4WD HIGH they do not engage, I must manually go out and switch them to manual. This makes a world of difference and engages the front end. Is there a vacuum leak possibly, any common places for a leak? I had thought if there was a leak that when I first turn the ignition on an you hear the air pump (I think it is an air pump) that it would keep going if there was a leak. I will be searching as well but thought I would ask as well.

You likely have a leak at either the lines going down to the hub or the seal inside the hub or on the back of the unit bearing. If your A/C vents are not going to defrost when you engage the ESOF, you may have an issue with the pulse actuator. Usually it's just a leak though.

BigAl,
Can you expand on what you mean about the AC? I noticed that when I had 4wd and the hubs were set to auto and not locking, my AC would not work/send cold air - I just figured something was wrong or its a known thing that when in 4wd - you don't get cold air - lol... But mine does not flow cold, I almost thought the AC clutch disengaged or something - but I didn't follow up. I will look at your links you provided, thank you!

Based on the research - it almost sounds like it is a good thing they are not working in "auto" because then I can run 4L which is really 2L when towing up steep grades or even down steep grades - do I interpret the research correctly?

Your A/C clutch issue is likely the air gap

SpringerPop's Compressor Clutch Air Gap

As for what I was talking about. If your vents were blowing any air through the dash vents and then you engaged the ESOF, if you have a leak, the air will move from blowing out of the dash to the defrost vents.

As for your research, yes the auto has no way to turn "off" unless you install a bypass switch for the pulse vacuum hub solenoid to not send the vacuum to the hubs to actuate them.

BigAlPSD,
OK, I wanted to check my "mind" so I went out to test. I have already done that AC fix and it worked great. So, I turn the truck on, turn AC on, then switch to panel heat and cool - everything works. I turn it to 4High, then all of a sudden the panel air switches to defrost - just like you have mentioned. It doesn't have anything to do with AC, because when it was coming out of the defrost - I turned off AC and put it on panel and it still came out the defroster. Weird.

In conclusion - does this mean I haveb an air or vacuum leak in the line somewhere? Is this a different issue than the vacuum line that controls the hubs or is it probably all related?

Thanks for your time and effort. I like the idea of a bypass switch. I was just telling my wife that a guy on here modified the panel next to the 4High 4Low swith by adding four/five rocker switches and painted them black to look stock. She asks, what would I do with all of those switches...... I only came up with two, here is another to add to my list . I only came up with reverse lights and fog lights. LOL....

You have a vacuum leak, either at the lines or the hub itself usually. Sorry I used the term A/C when I should have just said the air, no matter what temp.

You could go with a F650 Dash from Clay for your accessories!

Ahh, big Al I love you, LoL!

You described an issue I've been having with a vacuum leak since I bought the truck, and I forgot that the auto hubs are vacuum controlled (converting them to true manual was one of the first things I did to the truck).

I believe I know what my issue is now as it fits exactly what you mentioned (it wasn't causing issues after rigged part of the vacuum system on the control box [or whatever is on the passenger side fender, lol?] so I ignored it)

Will look into it tomorrow, sorry for the thread hijack! XD
RoD

EDIT: I agree with Al regarding the vacuum leak also, regarding the auto-lock issues.
