Air Conditioning problem

Hello all-

I Have a 2000 F-350 v-10. My air conditioning cycles back and forth between the defrost/heat vents and the actual A/C vents...extremely annoying! When I put the truck in 4wd I can get the A/C to immediately come through the A/C vents. The automatic locking hubs on the truck are vacuum actuated and so this maybe is a big clue but unsure. Any tips hints or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

You almost cetainly pinpointed the problem as a vacuum leak. The only way to find the leak is to trace out each line and look for obvious problems.

I would start at the 4WD hubs first since this is a likely place for a leak. If there is no obvious leak, you will end up having to temporarily disconnect the lines leading to the hubs and plug each end. If the AC vents work OK with the lines disconnected and plugged, one of the hubs or the line leading to them is the leaker.

Some folk here must have gone through this already and might have some valuable tips.

Thanks for the response Lou. I have two new OEM hubs in the truck (the old one's were worn out). I have done a brief but not thorough search of the vacuum lines and turned up nothing. My confusion is why would a vacuum leak influence the valve (i am ignorant to really how this valve works but) that changes the air from the defrost vents to the A/C vents. Cold air is coming out of both.

vac pump

i posted this earlier, but you can buy a small hand held vac pump with the gauge at your local parts store. just disconnect the 2 lines from the pump that is on the psgr side . you will see the lines that connect to the outlet doors. hook the vac pump up to the bad pump canister and start pumping the vac. the a/c doors should open at 350/400 but go ahead and pump around 600/650. everything will work as normal for a few days, then you will notice the doors starting the close. you may even hear a chatter depending on the blower speed.when this happens you have to do it all over again. 2 things..... you will have to keep the vac pump tied down under the hood unless you can put a cutoff valve in the line so you wont loose the vac. also do not turn the a/c to the off pos. the doors will stay open on max..a/c.. and vent. go past vent and the doors will close. i know you are thinking this is a red neck rig and it is. but it will work until you get the new factory pump.
