Part identification needed.

V10 engine, looking at the engine from the outside. What is the metal canister to the right of the air filter? What does it do? Where do the lines go and what do they do? They go from metal to rubber to metal to rubber to metal and run along the frame rail. They are marked gas/fuel, but do not go through the fuel filter. Is this part of the emissions? Charcol canister? While crawling under the ex tonight just checking things out, I noticed there are rubber hoses that lead to this canister close to the fuel filter that are getting old and soft. They are 3 short hoses in that area with a T or Y connecting up to some metal lines. They look very easy to replace but I just want to be prepared if they are full of fuel or something. I hope it's just some vacuumed hose for the tank or something.
Thanks for the help.

You guessed it! Charcoal canister for evaporative emissions.

If I want to replace these hoses what should I know? Will I need to purge anything after the change? I am assuming there should only be vapor in the lines. Does anyone know the exact size of these hoses?

It appears the hose is marked 12.7 mm which converts to 1/2". Will any 1/2 fuel hose suffice?

They are more than likely "full of" fumes. As the fuel in the tank evaporates it is caught by this system, stored and then burnt in the engine based on cycles determined by the PCM.

Personally I wouldn't spend the money to change them unless they throw a code. Even disconnected , it won't affect driveability.

I was thinking the same thing but do like to be proactive rather than reactive. I guess since I know about them and their condition if something does happen, I know where to look first. On the other hand the cost wouldn't b much to replace them to ease my mind. Decisions, decisions...

If you do, then simple fuel hose will suffice. As to the size...might be a trial and error thing but it sounds like you're on the right track.
