Glow plug issue,2002 Excursion..
Hey guys,my friend come to me with his wifes 2002 Excursion and the check engine light was on.I hooked it up to my AE and got codes for glow plugs(didn't write down the codes..sorry),anyway it was cylinders 2 4 6 8,would that indicate a GPCM issue or maybe a wiring problem?.I was thinking maybe the UVCH but he said it has never missed a beat...thoughts?...thanks Phil

Certainly, it could be a GPCM problem, or even the wiring plugs going into the GPCM. What really stinks about the Excursions is that all the other PSD's have GPR's that can be replaced for about $30, whereas a GPCM is about $120, and the wiring harnesses/plug sets are an additional $130. $30 versus $250. OH, and to put new plugs on, you have to cut and solder-on all the new connections. It's a royal pain in the @$$. Ugggh.
Pull the plugs going into the GPCM and see if the plastic is melted (and also in the GPCM). Could be burned out...the GPCM, plug adapters, or both.
But, as you mentioned, it very well could be his UVCH came unplugged. That's the cheapest fix (25 cents or even $35 for a new UVCH). Don't forget to re-torque everything in there while you're at it, and maybe even Ohm the glow plugs and injectors (like I said, all that work to get the VC off, might as well check everything else too).

Thanks,but I guess I really answered my own question,I wouldn't think it would be the UVCH cause like I said it has never run rough like it would if the harness had ever come loose,also the pins for the glow plugs are on the outside of the plug and the pins for the injectors are on the inside of the plug so if it was loose enough to throw a code for glow plugs I'm sure it would run bad too,Oh well just rambling I guess I was hoping someone with an EX would say"oh its just _____",I know the Excursions have a GPCM instead of a GPR..anyway thanks...Phil

California prepped 7.3L PSD F250/350's all have GPCM's too.
No such thing as a California Excursion. ALL 7.3L PSD Excursions were the same. They all came from the factory with GPCM's.
Phil, run your AE again. One bank being down is a tell-tale sign it's the GPCM, but having the GPCM code present along with the glow plug codes would nail it for you.

The "California prepped" 7.3's that came with GPCM's were the F250/350 trucks.
Joe (CSIPSD) has done this with his F250 and said he will eventually do it for his wife's Excursion too.

Man, that's sweet. I didn't think that was possible, and would have preferred to do that versus replacing both the plugs and GPCM. It cost me $275 in parts. Probably would've been cheaper to convert. Maybe I will do this on my other one.

However, I don't know what kind of conditions are necessary to trigger a fault code in either.

Ford did use a GPR on the first Excursions off the line. Ford switched from the GPR to the GPCM on the 7.3L Excursion on October 24, 1999.
