The PO installed a FMX trans in my truck along with a 351C. My problem is that the shifter (on the column) is in reverse order. Typical park is low gear and typical low gear is park. I dont guess it is really that big of a deal, but it is a little throwed off and a possible safety concern if someone is unfamiliar sits in it and decides I have left it in gear. (Somewhat unlikely scenario but one never knows for sure). Anyway the engine and trans are out of a 72 torino according to PO. Anybody ever run across this or fixed this before? Is there a fix?
It's certainly been 'run across' numerous times. It's typical of Ford transmissions and shift levers on the side of the trans. They point either up or down depending on if it was built for a floor shift or column shift. A fix could be as simple as converting to a floor shifter, or opening up the trans to change or turn over the shift arm, or modifying the shift arm as necessary to make what you have work.
It depends on the trans. Some are easy and you can do it externally. On others you have to go inside and drop the valve body to get to the shifting mechanism above, to pull the arm out for flipping.
I have considered this, but part of me would just like it to be right...you know. That part may get smaller and smaller depending on the amount of effort it will take though. :-) Plenty of other things to do...
