Today, I finally got around to rebuilding the column and stuck it i nthe truck. Well in the shed the column shifted throught all gears and operated properly. I got it in the truck and it will only shift from N-D-2-1. I put the column down in 1 and the trans down in 1 to connect the linkage and I started shifting up and when it gets to neutral it sticks. I got pretty rough with the column and it will not budge. I am 99% positive it is not the column because it worked fine before I put it in the truck this afternoon. Now what could be causing this with trans? The P/O said it wouldn't shift into park for years then someone else drove it and got rough with the shifter trying to shift it and it broke something inside. Well fixed to little problem inside and now it won't shift into park or reverse. Need help, one thing after another is getting old. I am not buying a trans because my budget doesn't allow for that. All I want is reverse, could care less about park.
I don't recommend this, because it might screw something up worse, but when I had a similar problem on my 73 Jeep Wagoneer, I crawled underneath it with a hammer and put it in park by "gently" tapping on the bracket on the side of the tranny. After that it would shift back and forth with no problem. But I stress, that I don't KNOW if this good to do, I only did it because I was ****ed at the damn shifter and was at the point where I didn't care if I ruined something or not.
Nothing binding the linkage. A friend said I should get some front tires and drive it around the field for alittle bit and change the trans fluid, he thinks since the truck has not moved under it's own power for about 3 years that something may be stuck and need loosening up. The hammer will come last
I would pull the pan and check out what is happening inside. It could be something simple causing a jam, but I wouldn't try to hammer on it. When you move the tranny's control lever, you are moving two links at once inside. It slides the spool in the valve body back and fourth, while at the same time moves the parking pawl actuating rod that goes to the back of the tranny. If this rod is the hang up, you could probably remove it if you don't need park to work. What you will end up with is N R N D 2 1.
I already have the filter to change the fluid just need to buy fluid. The e-brake works so I figure neutral + e-brake = park. I'm thinking this has been an issue for a long time, the P/O said he thought something in the column broke when it wouldn't go into park in the late '80s and it's been that way ever since, unsing neutral and the e-brake. No time to mess with it today, probably no time tomarrow, Thursday afternoon I have off so then I will see.
I've got the same problem right now. Pulled pan and sure enough, actuating rod for parking pawl is out to far and won't go in. I can see the spring on the pawl and it appears to have came off and over, it's setting in the middle of the passage for the actuating rod. When it gets to were I can see, I'm going to try to get that little sucker back over the pawl, I hope it will work.
TY Chief. I told a friend of mine what was going on and what I found off the internet and he said his did the same thing to him too. We're out of school Monday so he said he would come over and we would drop the pan and he said it would be nothin to fix it. Thanks.
Thanks, I'll try that. I did rebuild mine about 6 or 8 months ago, with shift kit. The thing is, I never actually unbolted the external linkage so I couldn't figure how the manual rod would be off that much. Looked, meaning drained and removed pan for the fourth time yesterday, and it seems to me that the rods' guide isn't closeing far enough. I made a temporary hanger from the bolt that holds the detent, so the rod couldn't fall so far, and it seemed to work fine all day. Different story today. Worked well three or four times now I don't have park. I can get everything else, sure I can do better but, get tired of haveing trans fluid all over, all the time.
Will drain and check internal linkage hopefully tomorrow and thanks.
I took the pan off and drained it all. I understand your trans fluid pains. It got everywhere it seems but i nthe pan I wantred it to go in when I unbolted the pan. Anyway, I can't really see the problem, my friend never showed but on this C4 I think i will have to take the valve body out to fix it? I can;t see much past it so tell anything. We'll see tomarrow.
If you take the pan off and start under on your back on the drivers side, then look straight up on the drivers side between the valve body and the outside of the transmission case, you'll see the manual rod (connects via levers to the valve body and goes to the rear of the case to make park) and up at the top a small bolt. The manual lever also has the detent with notches in it to hold the gear, so to speak. The detent on the manual rod and the levers that connect to the valve body are bolted together from the outside of the tranny and that's the point that your kick down and selector levers connect. Anyway, above the manual rod is a small bolt that holds the detent spring in place. The spring is what puts pressure on the detents and holds your manual rod in place.
Ahh ok that helps. Thanks. I saw that detent deal but i didn't look closely enough at the little bolt. First time even having the pan off of a trans. I'll see what I can dso this afternoon.
